      Two Days, One Night (2014)

Belgian filmmakers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne return with one of their typically downbeat films, one that's not only urgent, but quite emotionally powerful. Marion Cotillard stars in a very strong performance as a regular woman, Sandra, who works in a Belgian factory that makes solar panels. She suffers from depression and is recovering from a nervous breakdown, during which she took time off from work. To save money, the employees are -- rather cruelly -- given the opportunity to vote between getting an annual bonus or Sandra keeping her job. read more...

      Filmworker (2018)

I've been doing this a long time and I thought I knew a lot about Stanley Kubrick, but I didn't know about Leon Vitali. Vitali was a versatile, Shakespearian-trained actor. He has a pivotal role in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975), but was so enamored of the director's genius and mastery that he made a fateful decision. He quit acting and went to work with Kubrick, in whatever capacity he could. Therefore, Kubrick had him doing just about everything, from casting to designing advertising materials, from supervising foreign trailers, to color-correcting prints. He was almost solely in charge of Danny Lloyd during the making of The Shining (and in charge of fudging the child's schedule so Kubrick could work around child labor laws). And former drill sergeant R. Lee Ermey (recently passed away) recounts, misty-eyed, how he owed his role and his performance in Full Metal Jacket to Vitali. read more...

        Let There Be Light (1946)

Olive Films has released an essential Blu-ray, collecting all four of John Huston's wartime documentaries on one disc. These are: the relatively innocuous recruiting film Winning Your Wings (1942), featuring James Stewart; The Oscar-nominated Report from the Aleutians (1943), featuring (staged) battle footage, as well as footage of a bombing; San Pietro (1945), about a battle in a small village in Italy; and the powerful Let There Be Light (1946). That last one was an early example of how emotional stress in wartime can be just as incapacitating as physical injuries, but the military banned it, and it went unseen for decades. read more...

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015)

I am a huge music nerd and Nirvana is perhaps my favorite band of all time. Like an earlier generation and JFK, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I learned that Kurt Cobain was dead, and it affected me deeply; like many others of my age, I had connected with his music in a profound way. (And, yes, I own an old CD of Bleach.) So it's not easy for me to watch a documentary like Brett Morgen's Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck lightly. But I will say that I liked what I saw. It made me appreciate Kurt's music and artistry anew. Morgen was given access to tons of intimate home movie footage -- so intimate that it shows Courtney Love naked -- and deals openly with Kurt's drug use, mainly as a way to kill his undiagnosed stomach pain. As with Morgen's Chicago 10, the filmmaker also uses animated sequences to flesh out Kurt's audio recordings. We see Kurt bristling at interviewers' questions, and dealing with the music biz. But, ultimately, the movie manages to paint a portrait of a man so very lonely and brilliant that your heart breaks every time he creates something. Morgen uses interviews sparingly, and mainly focuses on Love an Kurt's bandmate Krist Novoselic (who goes all the way back to the beginning of Nirvana), and the movie also serves to exonerate Love from her image as Kurt's destroyer (Kurt clearly loved her very much). The movie includes a ton of amazing music, from well-known and less-known Nirvana recordings to Kurt noodling around with the Beatles' "And I Love Her." read more...
