Night and Fog (1955)

Filmed just ten years after the end of WWII, this 32-minute film tells the story of the Nazi concentration camps with the most cutting, painful urgency of any film. Director Alain Resnais used stills, archive footage and new footage of the deserted camps and combined it with a brilliant score by Hanns Eisler and narration written by Jean Cayrol, who survived such a camp. Absolutely one of the most important historical documents ever made. read more...

Chasing Ice (2012)

It has now been six years since Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth (2006) tried to warn us all about the increasing threat of global warming, now called the Climate Crisis. At the time Gore tried to argue that his film wasn't political, but his presence -- and the threatening title -- made it so anyway. One of the people who wasn't convinced was National Geographic photographer James Balog. read more...

United 93 (2006)

Here's a movie that I didn't want to see, didn't enjoy seeing and wouldn't wish upon anyone else. It left me shaking and sweating. Like a modern-day Battleship Potemkin, it re-creates some of the events of the morning of September 11, 2001, focusing on United Flight 93, which was prevented from reaching its target and crashed into a field. British director Paul Greengrass (Bloody Sunday, The Bourne Supremacy) avoids a single hero to drive the film, choosing instead a collective of Americans, and shies away from casting any easily recognizable actors (thus denying us distractions or comfort). read more...
