The Little Mermaid (1989)

Disney's The Little Mermaid, based loosely on the Hans Christian Andersen story and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, probably doesn't look like much today. Up to then, Disney releases like The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986) and Oliver & Company (1988) failed to excite many patrons or critics. The Little Mermaid ended Disney's long slump, became a blockbuster and started the company back up the ladder to power. A dynamic, Caribbean-flavored score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors) and an adorable heroine -- with a bell-clear singing voice -- helped pump some energy into the project. read more...

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

Star Trek fans know the secret code: even-numbered movies are good and odd-numbered movies are bad. Some fans will argue that Star Trek: The Motion Picture holds up extremely well as a surprisingly thoughtful and imaginative film, or that Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is inseparable from the beloved Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. But overall, the code holds true. Indeed, the new film and number 10 in the series, Star Trek: Nemesis, far surpasses its predecessor, the incredibly stupid Star Trek: Insurrection. On the other hand, the new film also bucks the code with its oddly unengaging presentation. read more...

Oblivion (2013)

Sadly, it's hard to explain any of this without giving away crucial plot twists, both for Moon and for Oblivion. But suffice to say that whereas the characters have a good reason to exist in Moon, they don't in Oblivion. read more...

Stardust (2007)

Directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) and based on a novel by Neil Gaiman, Stardust is the first summer movie of 2007 that actually celebrates storytelling, rather than concept selling. It revels in the idea of inventing great characters, running them through some spectacular, inventive tribulations and coming out, happier, on the other side. In that, it beautifully mixes and balances humor, adventure and romance better than any movie since The Princess Bride (1987). read more...
