Get Hard (2015)

Given their fan bases, the teaming of Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart in the new movie Get Hard, is a financially sound idea. But it's also a funny one. Consider the gimmick of size. Will Ferrell is funniest when he plays characters that are like children pretending at being an adult in a 6'3" teddy bear frame. read more...

Identity Thief (2013)

It only makes sense that she would be promoted to leading roles, which could be a mistake. What if she's better as a character actress? What if the entire movie is a joke about her weight and appearance? read more...

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

John Hughes wrote the screenplay for this silly, warm little guilty pleasure that nails most of the trials and tribulations of spending the holidays with family. Chevy Chase stars for the third time as Clark W. Griswold with Beverly D'Angelo as his wife Ellen. Juliette Lewis makes an early appearance as daughter Audrey, and, as usual Randy Quaid provides most of the laughs as country bumpkin cousin Eddie. read more...

Shanghai Noon (2000)

I'm pleased to report that Shanghai Noon is the best Jackie Chan movie in many moons. In his second Hollywood film Chan teams up with Owen Wilson, the charming, cleverly slow-witted, drawling actor who graced Bottle Rocket (1996), Anaconda (1997), and The Haunting (1999) and co-wrote the screenplays for Bottle Rocket and the brilliant Rushmore (1998). Wilson makes a much better partner for Chan than Chris Tucker did in the annoying Rush Hour (1998), in which Tucker spent the entire movie trying to upstage Chan while the script creaked along behind them. read more...

The Bad News Bears (1976)

In the original The Bad News Bears, Walter Matthau stars as Morris Buttermaker, who becomes the unwitting coach of a team of misfits and outcasts (fat kids, nearsighted kids, Mexican kids, Jewish kids, foul-mouthed kids, etc.). He recruits a girl, Amanda Whurlizer (Tatum O'Neal), for a pitcher, and a unwieldy motorcycle punk Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley), who both significantly improve the team's chances of winning. It suddenly occurred to me halfway through this that I was watching a W.C. Fields movie. Matthau was the perfect Fields for the modern age. He's a beer-swilling, grumbling curmudgeon who, when faced with the kids, develops a look on his face as if a dog just piddled on his best polyester suit. It's not long before the "David vs. Goliath" formula kicks in, but Matthau's perfectly restrained, brilliantly comic performance holds it together. read more...
