Superman (1978)

I was a fan of Superman since I could read, and I was very excited to see Superman: The Movie when I was about 9. I nearly leapt out of my seat when the first image was Action Comics No. 1, one of the most valuable comics of all time. As the movie progressed, I was thrilled to find that it was both exciting and funny, and lived up to all my wildest expectations. read more...

Up (2009)

Pixar's tenth animated feature film clocks in as one of their best. It's a fairly light, simple entertainment, without the sheer genius of the first hour of WALL-E, but it's also more balanced and satisfying than that film. In terms of its use of space and setting, it's a grand, graceful achievement, capturing a genuine feeling of height, gravity, and movement through empty sky. read more...

Back to the Future (1985)

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd play Marty McFly and Doc Emmett Brown, the two time-hoppers with a maximum of chemistry, and Mary Steenburgen charms as Lloyd's love interest in Part III. Universal's new three-disc set comes with plenty of documentaries, deleted scenes, and a few funny outtakes. Elisabeth Shue replaced Claudia Wells as Marty's girlfriend for Parts 2-3. Crispin Glover is great as Marty's dad. Flea, Elijah Wood and Jason Scott Lee can be glimpsed in smaller parts. Steven Spielberg executive produced all three films. read more...

Babe (1995)

Babe is the story of a little pig (voiced by E. G. Daily), won by Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell) at a state fair to be raised for Christmas dinner. By the time Christmas comes around, Hoggett and his wife (Magda Szubanski) decide to keep him to exhibit him in the fair. Before the fair comes along, Babe expresses an interest, and a talent, in sheepdogging, a talent that the farmer (called "the Boss" by the animals) picks up on. When his prize sheepdog is put out of commission, he enters Babe in a sheepdog contest. read more...

Toy Story 3 (2010)

The geniuses at Pixar haven't necessarily improved upon Toy Story 2 (1999), but more than ten years later they have effectively repeated its themes and provided a terrific and funny summer adventure. Andy (voiced by John Morris, who has provided Andy's voice in all three films) has continued to grow, and is now ready for college. His mother has ordered him to clean out his room. Everything in it either goes with him to college, into the attic, or into the trash. read more...
