Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)

The third Star Wars film, and the sixth in the series, begins with a bang as our heroes try to wrap up the threads left hanging at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. This exciting sequence, set on the desert planet of Tatooine, has the good sense to keep certain details from the audience, constantly surprising us with the breadth and depth of the elaborate rescue plan. As directed by Richard Marquand (Jagged Edge) and cleanly edited by Sean Barton, Duwayne Dunham and Marcia Lucas, the well-paced action adds up to one of the best sequences in the entire series, bursting with the characters' charisma and well-earned chemistry. read more...

Iron Man 2 (2010)

Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 sadly doesn't match the great emotional highs of other superhero "part twos" like Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight or X2: X-Men United. Rather, it concentrates on being lighter, more fleet-footed and more consistent than its predecessor. It also corrects the major flaw of Iron Man (2008), which forgot about characters during its final battle, concentrating on the clashing and clanging of two digital blips. Here, we get more Robert Downey Jr. and more friendly chatter. At the same time, it's also the biggest all-star Hollywood spectacular since Nine, boasting a long and generous cast list (with five Oscar nominees) where even the tenth-billed actor is worth the price of admission. (Plus, it has the benefit of not being in 3D!) read more...

The Incredibles (2004)

Of late, animated family films have begun to lose their luster. Unable to understand what appeals to today's children, studios pump them up with toilet jokes and pop culture references, machine-gunned at a conveyor belt pace (see Shark Tale). Worse, the studios are blaming their failure on old-fashioned musical numbers and hand-drawn animation without bothering to notice the enduring success of films like Beauty and the Beast and Spirited Away. Fortunately, certain animators still have a sense of pride. Brad Bird, who directed one of the best early "Simpsons" episodes (Krusty Gets Busted) as well as the extraordinary 1999 feature film The Iron Giant, returns with The Incredibles, a film so miraculous and so far above its competitors that the Academy Award for Animated Feature Film is no longer a contest. read more...

Iron Man (2008)

Actor/director Jon Favreau co-starred in the awful comic book adaptation Daredevil (2003), and even had a small part in Batman Forever (1995). You can almost picture him watching quietly, taking notes and learning from all those mistakes. He has applied his knowledge to his new film Iron Man, and has unexpectedly turned a minor superhero into one of the most enjoyable of Marvel Comics adaptations, ranking just behind the first two Spider-Man films and the first two X-Men films. read more...
