The Assassin (2015)

Hou Hsiao-hsien's The Assassin is one of the best movies of the year (possibly the best), and may be the best movie Hou has ever made in his long and highly acclaimed career. (It's my personal favorite of the ten Hou films I've seen to date.) It's also one of the most beautiful martial arts movies I've ever seen — it leaves Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon far, far behind — as well as being one of the most beautiful movies of any type I've seen in recent years. And yet I'm forced to couch my praise in caveats and warnings. read more...

Mystic River (2003)

After three very good pulpy potboilers, True Crime, Space Cowboys and Blood Work, Clint Eastwood has taken off the kid gloves and hunkered down to work. The result, Mystic River, is yet another great film from one of the half-dozen greatest American filmmakers working today. read more...

Crimson Gold (2003)

Abbas Kiarostami once again provided the story/screenplay for his pupil Jafar Panahi's newest film, Crimson Gold as he did for his amazing 1995 feature debut The White Balloon. But it's clear that even without his mentor's help, Panahi is the most promising of the new Iranian directors. read more...

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

I was hoping for a chance to see The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford a second time before I wrote my review, but only to confirm my suspicions that it's a surprising near-masterpiece, certainly one of the year's best films, and the best Western to come across the range since Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992) and Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man (1996). I had been looking forward to the film, mainly because 2007 had previously yielded two very good Westerns in Seraphim Falls and 3:10 to Yuma. I had also admired New Zealand director Andrew Dominik's previous and only other feature, Chopper (2000). But none of this prepared me for the scope, artistry and brilliance of this new film. read more...

Once Upon a Time In America (1984)

One of the finest films of the 1980s, this final film by Sergio Leone was ten years in the making. Hugely complex, achingly sad and splendidly gorgeous, it hops backward and forward to different eras in an opium-induced haze. It's a true epic, a great, sprawling folly, filled with big and small moments, rage and regret, noise and quiet, pugnaciousness and poetry. read more...
