Lemon (2017)

This weird comedy, based somewhat on the experiences of real-life couple Brett Gelman and Janicza Bravo, is as deadpan, absurd, and surreal as a movie can get, part off-putting, and part intriguing. read more...

Don't Look Back (1967)

I did not become a Bob Dylan fan until I was in my thirties, a thing that might have been unheard of back in Dylan's heyday in the 1960s. At the time, Dylan was a cultural revolutionary, stirring up controversy among his detractors (usually older), and adoration among his many fans (usually younger). Now Dylan is 74 years old, his albums are widely regarded as classics, and the movie Don't Look Back seems less like a political statement than it does a document of a time. Although once it starts unspooling, it feels just as fresh as it must have in 1967. read more...

    Let the Corpses Tan (2018)

A little bit Ruggero Deodato, a little bit Alejandro Jodorowsky, and a little bit Radley Metzger, Let the Corpses Tan seems obsessed with capturing the weirdness of the European cinema of the past, but without much of an idea where it stands in the present. In it, several criminals are hiding out in a crumbling ruin occupied by artist Luce (Elina Löwensohn), who still exudes sexiness in her cowboy boots and the way she issues commands. The thieves steal a cache of gold bars and are preparing to lay low, but they run into a woman, the woman's son, and their maid, who are looking for Luce's place. Then, two cops stumble upon the hideout, and this leads to a shootout that lasts the rest of the film. read more...

    Buffalo '66 (1998)

Written and directed by and starring Vincent Gallo, Buffalo '66 tells the story of a boy-man, who wears many shields and masks, and can't communicate his real feelings. The film seems to have the same problem, but it seeps into you anyway. Gallo was an actor in interesting films like Arizona Dream and Abel Ferrara's The Funeral. He has a pointy nose and jaw, and ferocious, sleepy eyes, like he's been awake for three days and he's pissed about it. The film opens when Gallo, playing Billy Brown, gets out of prison. The first thing he has to do is take a piss, and he looks all over creation for a place to do it. Here the film looks grim and gritty, like Drugstore Cowboy, and it doesn't come off funny. I'm not sure if it was supposed to. read more...
