Django Unchained (2012)

Up to now, the outrageously talented writer/director Quentin Tarantino has made both tightly constructed, polished gems (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction), as well as outrageously sprawling works of near-insanity (Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds). read more...

Trainspotting (1996)

When I was 16 or 17, I loved the film A Clockwork Orange. I still love it, but not anymore as a fun and comical romp through a sadistic wasteland. Now the violence in the film leaves me quiet instead of laughing. I imagine Trainspotting will have the same effect on youth today. Especially because the film is far more entertaining than anything else playing in the multiplexes right now (except maybe Supercop). read more...

Un Chien Andalou (1928)

Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali's Un Chien Andalou is absolutely essential viewing for anyone seriously interested in cinema. It's only 16 minutes long, so there's no excuse not to make time for it. While living in Paris in the 1920s, the maverick Buñuel naturally gravitated toward the surrealists, whose manifesto was to shake things up by showing life in a different light. Buñuel and Dali concocted Un Chien Andalou by assembling a series of shocking, dreamlike images, none of which told a story or had any ulterior motive or alternate meaning. read more...

Uzumaki (2000)

A small Japanese seaside town falls under a curse involving "uzumaki," or spirals. A friend's father (Ren Osugi) becomes obsessed and begins videotaping them. A schoolboy begins acting -- and even looking -- like a snail, with its spiral shell. One way or another people start dying and their deaths somehow all involve the "uzumaki." Only schoolgirl Kirie (Eriko Hatsune) and her best friend (and potential boyfriend) Shuichi (Fhi Fan) are unaffected. But for how long? Directed by Higichinsky, this freaky Japanese horror film uses all kinds of physical cinema techniques, such as shock cuts, flash cuts, dissolves, skip frames and superb digital effects in a constant effort to keep the film alive and spinning. read more...

Southland Tales (2007)

After a disastrous screening at Cannes (of an unfinished print), Richard Kelly's bruised and battered follow-up to his cult classic Donnie Darko (2001) sat shelved for over a year. It finally emerges this week into theaters. Southland Tales resembles nothing less than a vintage Godard, with a brainstorm full of ideas roiling and lurching and looking for purchase. read more...
