Frozen (2013)

Based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen, as was Disney's great The Little Mermaid (1989), the new Disney animated feature Frozen almost recaptures the spirit of the greatest of Disney films. It has a beautiful, spunky princess and some very nice, catchy musical numbers. But what it lacks is a certain warmth. read more...

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

After a frenzied chase, the two frogs wind up in the swamp, where they befriend a jazz-trumpet-playing alligator, Louis (voiced by Michael-Leon Wooley) and a Creole firefly, Ray (voiced by Jim Cummings), with a jagged smile of random teeth. They set out to find Mama Odie (voiced by Jenifer Lewis) in the hopes of becoming human again. Unfortunately, the Shadow Man is in need of the prince's blood to keep his spell working, and sends out an army of creepy shadow specters to track him down. Tiana still wants to open her restaurant, and the prince is resigned to marry the wealthy blonde Charlotte (voiced by Jennifer Cody), but of course, the two protagonists fall in love. read more...

The Princess Bride (1987)

The Princess Bride made only a few top ten lists in 1987, was only nominated for one Oscar (Best Song), and did not particularly make much money. But it's become one of the hottest cult videos of the 1980s, and a family classic besides, enjoyed by new generations of youngsters as well as their parents. I've seen it some dozen times now, and I wouldn't change even the smallest detail. Everything in it is nearly perfect, and deliciously alive. read more...

The Gold Rush (1925)

"I don't need interesting camera angles," Charlie Chaplin once said, "I am interesting." He was right; Chaplin's artistry always springs from the figure at the center of the frame rather than the arrangement of objects within the frame. Chaplin's "Little Tramp" character, with twirling cane and little moustache -- and his too-tight coat and hat and too-loose shoes and pants -- was always an outsider longing to get in. He spent every second of every film looking for the Dream: a good meal, a nice place to stay, and people to love him. read more...
