    Chef (2014)

Those of us who love food movies have been waiting a while for something as great as Babette's Feast and Big Night to come along. Oh, there have been good things here and there, some documentaries, especially Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and Adrienne Shelly's funny, dark Waitress has some great pie-baking scenes. But Jon Favreau's Chef feels like it could be the first movie that deserves their company. read more...

      El Dorado (1967)

The year 1967 was a strange crossover time in American film. Directors like Howard Hawks had been canonized by the French "auteur" theory, and critics-turned filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Peter Bogdanovich were freely citing Hawks as an influence. At the same time, younger moviegoers were becoming attracted to new, hip cinema like Blow Up, Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate, and Hawks and John Wayne were considered fogeys, way past their prime. When El Dorado was released, half the public was celebrating and hero worshipping, and the other half was sneering. read more...

        The Wings of Eagles (1957)

Immediately following his masterpiece The Searchers, John Ford made this bizarre, but touching, comical biopic of Frank "Spig" Wead, the former pilot-turned-screenwriter who had worked with Ford twice, on Air Mail (1932) and They Were Expendable (1945), as well as Howard Hawks on Ceiling Zero (1936). read more...

          White Christmas (1954)

In 1942, Bing Crosby released one of the biggest recorded hits of all time, "White Christmas," and twelve years later came the official movie, White Christmas (1954), filmed in color and "Vistavision." Crosby plays a popular singer, Bob Wallace, who is stationed overseas during WWII. During an attack, songwriter Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) saves Bob's life, and they become partners in peacetime. Teaming up with sister singers Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen), they decide to put on a show to save their old major general's struggling Vermont hotel. Director Michael Curtiz's approach seems a little lethargic at times, the plot relies a bit too much on a ridiculous misunderstanding, and the movie isn't actually all that Christmasy. But it does have a lovely laid-back simplicity that fits in with what the holiday season ought to feel like. read more...

          Pride (2014)

Lately, it seems that every couple of months we get a new movie in The Full Monty mode: a sweet U.K. comedy-drama about plucky working-class folks who do something terribly out of the ordinary to save the community; in the process, several of the stuffier characters usually learn to lighten up and love life. Directed by Matthew Warchus (whose only other film is the forgotten, 15 year-old Simpatico), Pride is probably one of the better examples, leaning less toward cuteness a bit more toward earnestness. read more...
