Foreign Correspondent (1940)

Alfred Hitchcock wanted Gary Cooper for this superior espionage thriller, but Hitch was still a Hollywood amateur and hadn't yet developed his reputation (Cooper thought it would be "beneath" him to make a mere "thriller.") And though Hitch considered his eventual star "too easy-going," Joel McCrea works very well as an American reporter sent to Europe to scrape up news during the early days of WWII. He gives the movie a light touch and even provides a few laughs. read more...

Only Angels Have Wings (1939)

Dark Victory, Gone With the Wind, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Love Affair, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz and Wuthering Heights. This was the lineup of the 1939 Academy Awards, considered by many to be the finest year for movies. But, typical of the Academy, they forgot perhaps the best film of the lot, and not because it was some forgotten, no-budget indie either. read more...

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

James Thurber's 1939 short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of those items they make everyone read in school. The difference is that it's really enjoyable, even if you're being forced. It's a very simple story of just a few pages that takes place over the course of maybe an hour as Walter Mitty goes shopping with his wife and imagines four different detailed fantasies. read more...

Red Cliff (2009)

As a battle epic, John Woo's Red Cliff is as impressively mounted as Braveheart and Gladiator, but as directed by Hong Kong action master John Woo, it easily surpasses them in terms of style and grace, action and cinematography. (It is currently the all-time box office champion in China.) During the Han Dynasty, the evil Chancellor Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) embarks on a campaign to wipe out two rebel forces, with the might of the emperor's army on his side. Representing the two rebel armies, strategist Kongming (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and viceroy Zhou Yu (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) team up to battle Cao Cao; together they use wisdom and cunning against the villain's brute strength. The movie depicts several smaller, individual attacks and battles before building up to the final showdown. read more...

Tarzan and His Mate (1934)

Many writers have tried to understand the appeal of this very strange story of a man raised in the jungle by apes. The most plausible idea is that Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote it at the turn of the century, at the beginning of the industrial age, and it represented a yearning to get back to nature, to indulge in our animal side. Moreover, the jungle sets are more inviting than a real jungle might be. In any case, Tarzan has resulted in at least 40 official movies and probably several dozen more unofficial ones. read more...
