    What's Cooking? (2000)

This one could be classified as a so-called "chick flick," but What's Cooking? (2000) is so nicely balanced and fine-tuned by director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) that it turns into an honest holiday film, filled with plenty of delicious-looking shots of Thanksgiving dishes being prepared and served. It focuses on four families: one Jewish, one Vietnamese, one African-American, and one Latino, as they go about their holidays, filled with personal dramas. A son lies to his family to spend the holiday with his girlfriend, a lesbian couple tries to cope with conservative parents, a pushy mother-in-law gets in the way, an ex-husband is accidentally invited to dinner, and a gun is found in a teen's backpack. The stories are universal and could apply to anyone of any background, and indeed, the 17 year-old movie is surprisingly timeless (a political discussion in one scene could easily apply to last year's election). Chadha co-wrote the screenplay with her husband Paul Mayeda Berges. The all-star cast includes Joan Chen, Julianna Margulies, Kyra Sedgwick, Mercedes Ruehl, Lainie Kazan, Alfre Woodard, and Dennis Haysbert. read more...

      The Hero (2017)

As with his wonderful I'll See You in My Dreams, director Brett Haley manages to take an underused subject, i.e. a character over seventy, and make a movie that's deeply soulful and sweetly easygoing. read more...

        Strange Weather (2017)

This slight drama doesn't have very much to it, but any movie about a middle-aged woman is a welcome rarity, and in it, Holly Hunter proves she can still bring life and spirit to any kind of material. read more...

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)

This feature-length film picks up where the final episode of Breaking Bad (still the greatest TV show ever produced) left off. It's almost totally unnecessary, and it feels as if virtually nothing happens during its 2 hour and 2 minute running time, but every second of it is absolutely riveting, masterful. Basically Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) escapes from his captors and spends the entire movie trying to get out of town. And that's it. It feels like a modern Western, sparse and exterior, with characters occupying a vast and unfriendly space. Some old familiar faces turn up, as well as some new ones (Robert Forster, who, astonishingly passed away the day this premiered, is terrific). read more...
