Let Me In (2010)

Released the same weekend as Twilight, Tomas Alfredson's Swedish import Let the Right One In (2008) -- based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel -- never became a cash cow, but it did one better: it earned the adoration of both horror fanboys and mainstream critics, and both groups proclaimed it among the greatest vampire movies ever made. Before anyone could say "sacrilegious," Hollywood pumped out this close remake, set in 1983 New Mexico, with Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) directing, but employing a similarly chilly, patient mood. Truthfully, if Let Me In were an original, it would be fairly terrific. But it lives in the shadow of its predecessor, and the inevitable comparisons are not favorable. read more...

Horns (2014)

Based on a novel by Joe Hill (the son of Stephen King), Horns feels cramped and cluttered, even at two full hours in length. Whereas a novel might have had more room to explore its classical themes of good and evil, the movie can't seem to figure out what it's really about. Ideas are raised, contradicted, and dropped. But these are certainly more potentially interesting than the rudimentary "mystery" that the movie unfolds. read more...

Carrie (2013)

It's hard to care much about the idea of a remake of Brian De Palma's 1976 masterpiece Carrie -- given one ill-fated sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, a TV remake in 2002 and various Broadway productions -- until we consider that it comes from Kimberly Peirce, the outsider director of Boys Don't Cry (1999) and Stop-Loss (2008), who works all too infrequently. Given her penchant for bullied characters and her overall female perspective, this pairing makes startling sense. read more...

Ravenous (1999)

Ravenous is a terrifically well-made gory horror movie with splashes of humor. Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) stars as a mysterious man who turns up at a California military outpost, circa 1850, and turns out to be a cannibal. Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential), David Arquette (Scream), Jeffrey Jones (Amadeus), and Jeremy Davies (Saving Private Ryan) also star as American soldiers. Director Antonia Bird (Priest, Mad Love) keeps everything smart and balanced, and an amazing score by Michael Nyman (The Piano, Gattaca) -- reminiscent of 1970s-era Italian horror movies -- keeps us on our toes. This is not for the faint of heart; it may convert you into a vegetarian. read more...

The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

Halloween: my favorite time of year. For whatever reason, I still get a charge from the warm autumn air, the smell of pumpkins and cheap rubber costumes. Plus, it's time to sit down with piles and piles of horror and suspense movies on DVD, beginning with the wondrous two-disc set of The Phantom of The Opera: The Ultimate Edition (1925) starring the indefatigable Lon Chaney in his most famous role. read more...
