Scrooged (1988)

Bill Murray is the one of the greatest screen Scrooges in this 1980s updating, which features the funniest and most callous Christmas Special spoof ever filmed ("The Night the Reindeer Died"). He plays Frank Cross, television producer who plans a very expensive, live "Christmas Carol" production on Christmas Eve. He has stepped over everyone to get ahead, and this year three ghosts visit him to get him back on track again. read more...

Ghostbusters (2016)

In this age of Trump, with a myriad of nasty little fears and hatreds bubbling up from all corners of America, the new Ghostbusters reboot has caused quite a stir. Apparently, people everywhere are furious that four women have taken over the franchise, replacing four men. This seems, to me, a completely misplaced bit of rage. The making of this version involves not one bit of change in the original version. It's still there. The correct and true answer is, of course women can be Ghostbusters, and a great deal more besides. Why not? (Why aren't people angry about Warcraft, or any number of other cinematic insults hurled this year?) read more...

Central Intelligence (2016)

Diminutive Kevin Hart seems to work best in movies when paired with a polar opposite, like the sneering street thug Ice Cube, or the very large but childlike Will Ferrell. In the mildly entertaining Central Intelligence, he's paired with brawny former pro wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. It works, but the hitch this time is that Johnson has stretched a little further than usual with his comic chops and has created a hilarious character. read more...

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

Nestled between Kevin Reynolds' Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood (2010), Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) actually looks like a champion, like the small film that robbed from the two soulless blockbusters and gave a hero back to the people. Certainly it has the best Robin Hood of the three films: Cary Elwes is far more dashing and jubilant than either Kevin Costner or Russell Crowe, and he seems born for the role, rather than shoehorned into it. read more...

Horrible Bosses 2 (2014)

The original Horrible Bosses was funny, fresh, and smart, and now Horrible Bosses 2 is unfunny, stale, and dumb. In the first movie, the characters were stuck in intolerable situations, and it was easy to side with them. This time their own crushing stupidity gets them into their mess, and sympathy is in short supply. Worse, the trio is together in every scene, and their shtick is the same throughout: Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day) chatter incessantly about vaguely unrelated topics, and Nick (Jason Bateman) rolls his eyes and makes flat, deadpan comments. read more...
