South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho already has an impeccable track record, but he has stepped up his game with this powerfully revealing social satire, half insanely funny, and half merely insane. read more...

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

In Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels (1941), filmmaker John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) longs to make a serious movie. He's tired of making dumb comedies like Ants in Your Pants of 1939. He storms around his producer's office and whines, "I wanna make O Brother, Where Art Thou?" If we could transport John Sullivan (or indeed even Preston Sturges) from 1941 and sit them down to watch this new movie with the same title, I think he would be rather astonished. But for the rest of us, the Coen brothers have done it again. read more...

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

"I always wanted to be a Tenenbaum," says Eli Cash (Owen Wilson) in The Royal Tenenbaums. "So did I," says the man himself, Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman). I don't know if I would echo their sentiment, but I sure do love watching the Tenenbaums. read more...

The House of Yes (1997)

Based on a play by Wendy MacLeod, The House of Yes (1997) is set in 1983, when Marty Pascal (Josh Hamilton) brings his fiancée Lesly (Tori Spelling) home to meet his supremely dysfunctional family on Thanksgiving. There's his odd mother (Genevieve Bujold) and his fresh-faced younger brother Anthony (Freddie Prinze Jr.), but the center of the house is Marty's twin sister Jackie (Parker Posey), who is obsessed with Jackie Kennedy as well as with her brother. read more...

Ed Wood (1994)

I've since seen Ed Wood about six times, and it's brilliant. Anyone else but Tim Burton probably would have made fun of Wood, the "worst filmmaker of all time," but the movie is instead a loving tribute to an artist who got at least six films made (the movie shows us three), despite lack of finance and lack of talent. Burton had enough clout to use Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski's original first draft of the script, with no rewrites or doctors, a rarity for a high profile Hollywood movie. The final product is tough, uncompromising, touching, gritty and funny. Bela Lugosi's drug problem is faced, which would probably have been cut out by Hollywood meddlers. read more...
