That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)

At age 28, Luis Buñuel co-directed (with Salvador Dali) one of the most notorious films of all time, the 16-minute Un Chien Andalou, still famous for its scene of a barber (Buñuel himself) slicing a woman's eye open. At age 77, Buñuel had not dimmed this playful fury, as shown by his last film, one of his masterpieces, That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). read more...

The Brood (1979)

In this early exploration of body manipulations by David Cronenberg, murderous, unearthly children appear to be the work an evil psychologist (Oliver Reed). Samantha Eggar stars as a woman who places herself in the doctor's care, neglecting her daughter and husband (Art Hindle). It's uncannily perceptive for a so-called exploitation horror movie, digging right to the center of the human love/horror reaction to our offspring. This is one of the great filmmaker's best early films, and a stylistic -- if not budgetary -- breakthrough. MGM/UA's DVD comes only with a trailer, but the price certainly won't break the bank. read more...

The Box (2009)

Filmmaker Richard Kelly takes Richard Matheson's great 1970 short story "Button, Button" and expands it way beyond its logical ending. He ventures boldly into the ludicrous, and comes out the other side with an even more sinister conclusion. read more...

Seconds (1966)

John Frankenheimer's Seconds is one of the rare sci-fi films that skimped on special effects and concentrated on ideas. A middle-aged man decides to invest in a company that provides you with a younger face, body and identity. In this case he wakes up as Rock Hudson! He moves to California and becomes a successful artist, but realizes that he has no more answers in this life than he did in his old one. It's a dark vision of humanity and technology but fascinating nonetheless. James Wong Howe's black-and-white cinematography received an Oscar nomination. Paramount released a DVD in 2002 with a great commentary track by director Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate). The Criterion Collection released an updated version in 2013 (both DVD and Blu-ray) with new extras. read more...
