Bitter Melon (2018)

San Francisco filmmaker H.P. Mendoza — a writer, composer, and actor on the terrific Colma: The Musical — delivers this deceptive comedy-drama about a Filipino-American family Christmas. Two sons return home: younger Declan (Jon Norman Schneider) is gay and comes from New York, and older Moe (Brian Rivera) comes from Philadelphia; Moe is married to an African-American woman but has left her behind so as not to upset his conservative family. Unfortunately middle brother Troy (Patrick Epino) still lives at home and rules through his abusive behavior toward his wife (Theresa Navarro) and mother (Amelie Anima). The newly arrived sons try to spend as much time out as they can, but it's not long before they realize that the world would be better off without Troy. A plan to kill him is suggested, briefly laughed at, and then taken seriously. Mendoza balances humor and darkness with amazing deftness, and spends enough time with each character so that they move beyond their one-line descriptions. read more...

À Nous la Liberté (1931)

Rene Clair's Under the Roofs of Paris (1930) and A nous la liberte (1931), both released on DVD by the Criterion Collection, have been celebrated for over 70 years, but I found them a bit too quaint. Compared to his contemporaries Jean Renoir and Jean Vigo, Clair was a minor talent, though both of these films do contain innovative uses of sound mixed with silent film. Under the Roofs of Paris is a love triangle between a songwriter, a gangster and a beautiful woman, while À Nous la Liberté is about two prison escapees, the first who makes a fortune in sound equipment and the second who threatens to blow his cover. However, each disc comes with infinitely more interesting short films. The Roofs disc comes with Paris qui dort (1925), a silent sci-fi film about a group of Parisians who wake up to find the entire town frozen in time. The Liberte disc comes with Entr'acte, Clair's 1924 surrealist short originally shown between two acts of an opera. read more...

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

New Zealand-born actor filmmaker Taika Waititi is a talent to watch; he has the ability to mesh a wonderfully dry sense of humor with a little bit of heart. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short in 2005, his coming of age movie Boy (2010) was one of the best of its type I'd seen in some time, his vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows (2014) was delightfully screwy, and now Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) is lovely, funny, and fresh. It plays a little like a cartoon, with its oddball characters traipsing around in the beautiful, unpredictable New Zealand bush, but it never lets go of genuine human feelings. read more...

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017)

Netflix snapped up this movie, lickety-split, from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and gave it a streaming premiere before festival goers could even stamp the snow out of their boots. The wonderful, unsung New Zealand-born actress Melanie Lynskey stars in I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017) as Ruth Kimke, a nursing assistant who has a very bad day. A patient dies in front of her (after some nasty, vulgar last words), a man in a bar ruins a huge plot twist in a book she's reading, and, to top it off, her home is burgled. The cops do little but scold her for not locking up tighter, but when her phone shows the location of her stolen laptop, she enlists a wacko neighbor, Tony (a perfect Elijah Wood), who has a collection of ninja throwing stars, to help get it back. read more...

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

Based on a novel by Jesse Andrews (who also wrote the screenplay), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was a massive hit at Sundance, although by the time it hit theaters, the hype seemed to have worn off. The actual movie falls somewhere in-between: it's not a masterpiece, but it's funny and pretty entertaining. It is something of a disease-of-the-week movie, but like the better examples of that genre, it doesn't actually focus on the disease. High school senior Greg (Thomas Mann) is a self-described outcast whose only activities are avoiding other people at school, and making funny little parody films with his "co-worker" Earl (RJ Cyler). (Titles include A Sockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Butt, though they are particularly fond of Werner Herzog.) When his mother (Connie Britton) hears that a classmate, Rachel (Olivia Cooke) has cancer, she pushes Greg into paying her a visit. The visits become a regular thing, and soon, Greg allows her to see his films. That leads to the proposition that Greg and Earl make a film just for Rachel, but they have no idea what to make and time is running out. First-time director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon keeps the mood alive and quirky, allowing genuine sadness to seep in at the corners; Mann's narration helps nail down the mood. Jon Bernthal plays a helpful teacher who lets Greg and Earl eat lunch in his office and watch classic films, Molly Shannon is Rachel's mom, swilling a lot of white wine, and Nick Offerman is typically hilarious as Greg's father, who likes to eat strange foods. read more...
