The Brood (1979)

In this early exploration of body manipulations by David Cronenberg, murderous, unearthly children appear to be the work an evil psychologist (Oliver Reed). Samantha Eggar stars as a woman who places herself in the doctor's care, neglecting her daughter and husband (Art Hindle). It's uncannily perceptive for a so-called exploitation horror movie, digging right to the center of the human love/horror reaction to our offspring. This is one of the great filmmaker's best early films, and a stylistic -- if not budgetary -- breakthrough. MGM/UA's DVD comes only with a trailer, but the price certainly won't break the bank. read more...

Lord of Illusions (1995)

The great Clive Barker is known as a horror/fantasy writer and an artist, but he also made a brief foray into filmmaking, writing and directing only three feature films, all of them fascinating and bursting with personality. He became disillusioned with the business of filmmaking, and how clueless studio executives could tinker with his work, but nowadays his films can be seen in their preferred director's cuts, including his third, Lord of Illusions. I just caught up with it for the first time on Shout! Factory's superb 2014 Blu-ray release, which includes the 109-minute theatrical cut and the 121-minute director's cut. read more...

Werewolf Woman (1976)

Rino Di Silvestro's Werewolf Woman (1976) is an amazing movie, but not by any normal standards. It's amazing for its peculiar imagination, for its confident disregard for common sense, and for the courage of its convictions. The movie starts with a sequence involving a werewolf woman. It's nighttime, she's covered with hair and bounds around in the woods tearing people apart. But it turns out that she's not an actual werewolf. She just thinks she is (and, apparently, one of her ancestors was a lycanthrope). So every 30 days when the moon cycles and turns full, she gets homicidal tendencies. read more...
