Danger: Diabolik (1968)

Based on an Italian comic book (or "fumetti"), this Mario Bava crime thriller has never enjoyed the devotion of Bava's horror films. It probably suffered from bad timing, released among the campy but similar movies Batman (1966) and Barbarella (1968). But looking at the film on Paramount's superb new DVD, it's clear that a neglected masterpiece of the genre has now emerged. read more...

True Romance (1993)

I have long regarded Tony Scott as, to quote Zero Mostel in The Producers, the worst director that ever lived. His credits include Revenge, Beverly Hills Cop II, Top Gun and Days of Thunder. His last film was the much-anticipated second script by hot writer Shane (Lethal Weapon) Black, called The Last Boy Scout, which was universally panned. Now, for the second time, the Hollywood powers that be have given a much-anticipated second script to Scott. The script is by Quentin Tarantino, whose first film, Reservoir Dogs, is one of the best films I have ever seen. read more...

Out of Sight (1998)

This is an outstanding crime film from director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Frank, who adapted Elmore Leonard's novel. George Clooney plays Jack Foley, a cut-rate bank robber who breaks out of jail and falls for the lady Marshall (the wonderful Jennifer Lopez) on his trail. Out of Sight has as many surprises, twists, and turns as Pulp Fiction (1994), but seems to belong in another league of filmmaking entirely. read more...

Hardcore Henry (2016)

Shot entirely from a first-person point of view, and staged like a video game, this action extravaganza doesn't care about characters, but as an experimental exercise in pure style, it's pretty cool. read more...
