Unforgettable (1996)

In 1994, John Dahl had a good year. His Red Rock West was rescued from obscurity and became a theatrical hit, thanks to San Francisco's Roxie Releasing, and his The Last Seduction opened to enthusiastic praise, with discussion of an Oscar nomination for its incredible star, Linda Fiorentino. (She was unfortunately disqualified, since the movie had played on cable.) Dahl probably had his choice of scripts for a follow-up, and it was only natural that just about everyone was disappointed by Unforgettable. It's a oddball movie, to be sure, but with a little perspective, and knowing Dahl's touch for film noir, it becomes an interesting and welcome item in his filmography; it's certainly less of a black sheep than The Great Raid. read more...

Wild at Heart (1990)

Adapted from Barry Gifford's novel, Wild at Heart mixes a little The Wizard of Oz with a dash of Elvis and becomes David Lynch's least engaging film. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern star as Sailor and Lula, a delinquent couple dripping with chemistry. These beautiful star-crossed lovers hit the highway after Lula's mother (Diane Ladd) puts out a contract on Sailor's life. Willem Dafoe co-stars and is at his most menacingly psychotic as Bobby Peru, a reptilian fiend who tricks Sailor into joining him on an ill-fated robbery. Isabella Rossellini, Harry Dean Stanton, Crispin Glover, Jack Nance, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee and others appear in supporting roles or cameos. read more...

Sinister 2 (2015)

The original Sinister was a passable chiller, but the sequel feels more like a vague attempt to create a lucrative franchise than to create anything truly interesting or spooky. The first film had Ethan Hawke in an interesting role, as a struggling writer. Sinister 2 has only James Ransone as a likably flawed hero; even if his motives and background are not clear, he's brave and takes charge, but still vulnerable. The other characters are thinly written, including the villains. read more...

Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)

Like all anthology films, this one -- based on Rod Serling's groundbreaking TV series (1959-64) -- has its high and low points, and not where you'd expect. Steven Spielberg's "Kick the Can" segment, with its unabashed sentimentality and odd character motivation, is unquestionably the weakest. John Landis' segment, about a bigot who learns firsthand about discrimination, is infamous for its on-set accident that killed lead actor Vic Morrow. But for all that, it's a fairly accomplished entry. read more...

    The Sorcerers (1967)

The basic concept is ludicrous, but the execution is terrific. In his waning years, Boris Karloff gives a vibrant performance as Marcus Monserrat, a hypnotist who once used his gift to treat patients, but was discredited by a newspaper story. Now he and his wife Estelle (Catherine Lacey -- in a deliciously potent performance) have perfected a mind control machine. Enter the bored, young Michael Roscoe (Ian Ogilvy), a fixture on the Swinging London scene, with his girl Nicole (Elizabeth Ercy) and his best friend Alan (Victor Henry). Tired of clubbing, he goes for a walk alone, stumbles upon the old couple and volunteers for a "new experience." One psychedelic light show later and Michael is under Marcus and Estelle's control. The trouble is that Estelle goes crazy with power; she begins making Michael steal furs for her, then leads him to murder! read more...
