Belle de Jour (1967)

If Martin Scorsese's recent films have been disappointing (Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence), at least he is using his power as a filmmaker to re-release classic films to the general public. Thanks to Scorsese, Mirimax picked up the distribution rights to the "lost" classic by director Luis Buñuel (who is probably most famous for slicing up that cow eye in 1928's Un Chien Andalou). Its subject matter understandably offended some upon its initial release, but it's the best film you can see in the theaters right now. read more...

That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)

At age 28, Luis Buñuel co-directed (with Salvador Dali) one of the most notorious films of all time, the 16-minute Un Chien Andalou, still famous for its scene of a barber (Buñuel himself) slicing a woman's eye open. At age 77, Buñuel had not dimmed this playful fury, as shown by his last film, one of his masterpieces, That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). read more...

The Trial (1962)

Orson Welles called it the best movie he ever made. No, it's not Citizen Kane (1941), it's The Trial (1962), which has finally been released on an essential DVD. Welles always claimed that Kane was the only film over which he had complete control, but The Trial came close. He had control over every aspect except the music, which to my ears, turned out great. read more...

My Own Private Idaho (1991)

Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho was my favorite film in 1991. I saw it three times in the theater (easy, given that I worked at a movie theater and could get free passes to it). I was drawn to it perhaps the way earlier audiences might have been drawn to an outlaw film like Rebel Without a Cause. It's a mixed-up grab bag of linear storytelling and experimental techniques, with elements of Shakespeare mashed up against a totally modern story of sexualized teens. River Phoenix gives perhaps the strongest performance of his remarkable, mercurial, and tragically short career as Mike, a narcoleptic street hustler. While servicing a client, he meets Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), a fellow hustler who belongs to a wealthy family. They begin to hang out together, and with a Falstaff-like figure. They travel, there's a betrayal, a song by the Pogues, and things drift ever onward like a road that goes all the way around the world. It's as touching a portrait of loneliness and need as was ever created in the American independent cinema. read more...
