The Phantom of Liberty (1974)

The key scene in Luis Bunuel's The Phantom of Liberty is the one that takes place at a dinner party. Guests gather around the table, pull down their pants and sit on toilets. They talk, rifle through magazines andotherwise engage in casual conversation. One guest rises, politely excuses himself and shyly asks for the dining room. Once inside, he shuts the door and begins eating. read more...

Southland Tales (2007)

After a disastrous screening at Cannes (of an unfinished print), Richard Kelly's bruised and battered follow-up to his cult classic Donnie Darko (2001) sat shelved for over a year. It finally emerges this week into theaters. Southland Tales resembles nothing less than a vintage Godard, with a brainstorm full of ideas roiling and lurching and looking for purchase. read more...

Brazil (1985)

Terry Gilliam's masterful Brazil was one of the best films of the 1980s. Jonathan Pryce stars as a weasly clerk who dreams of flying with a beautiful blonde woman (Kim Greist). But in real life, he trudges through a strange, yet familiar, universe full of ineffectual machines and loads of paperwork. As Pauline Kael pointed out in her review, the film uses vertical lines more than horizontal, trapping its characters in steely cages. Robert De Niro steals a few scenes as Harry Tuttle, a renegade repairman who glides through the air on slender cables, stealing into people's apartments at night to fix malfunctioning air-conditioning units. And Michael Palin appears to lend the film some Monty Python-esque absurdity. read more...

Songs from the Second Floor (2000)

Forget everything you know about current mainstream cinema. Forget plot or storytelling. Think back to Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali or Jean-Luc Godard with a dash of Terry Gilliam thrown in. Take that, refrigerate it until it's cold and blue, then add some goofy, odd elevator-type music, and you've got Songs from the Second Floor. read more...
