The American President (1995)

Writer extraordinaire Aaron Sorkin broke into the movies by adapting his play A Few Good Men to the screen; that led to his original script for The American President (1995), and his fascination with political process. This movie will seem so gentle and innocent compared to today's headlines, but perhaps it's a good antidote. The story wonders what would happen if a United States president became widowed during office; could he re-marry? What would the public think? So President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) is running for re-election and meets lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening). They make a deal involving a controversial environmental bill, and the president must learn to stand up for what he believes in, or lose her. It's a delightful, escapist fantasy, in which good guys win and bullies don't. Interestingly, Martin Sheen co-stars as the White House Chief of Staff, and went on to play POTUS four years later in Sorkin's TV series The West Wing. Rob Reiner directs, with his usual briskness and brightness. read more...

Trouble in Paradise (1932)

If there were any justice, Trouble in Paradise would be mentioned in the same breath with Some Like It Hot, and indeed, even Citizen Kane. But it's not, and that's because hardly anyone has seen it. It's not available on video (except in an expensive and out-of-print laserdisc box set) and it's rarely screened. But now the good folks at Universal, who now own much of Paramount's old product, have agreed to show their archive print at the Roxie for a week. All fans of romantic comedies, or even fans of great filmmaking, need to see this movie. read more...

Notting Hill (1999)

Julia Roberts stars, in arguably her best role, as a lovable, glamorous movie star; Hugh Grant teams up with writer Richard Curtis for the second time, and we've got a winner. William Thacker (Grant) sells travel books in the title neighborhood, and Anna Scott (Roberts) -- in the neighborhood shooting a movie -- stops in for something to read. William's nervous charm makes an impression on her and an impossible romance is born. Curtis and director Roger Michell (far more intuitive than Four Weddings director Mike Newell) find all kinds of complex emotional entanglements having to do with celebrity, but they avoid the dark satire that could easily have resulted. Once again, the colorful supporting cast provides a welcome reality to William's fantasy life, and once again, Grant strikes up a remarkable chemistry with his co-star. Only a pandering ending ruins the spell. Alec Baldwin appears unbilled as Anna's obnoxious boyfriend. read more...

When Harry Met Sally... (1989)

Arguably the prototype for the modern-day romantic comedy (Woody Allen's Annie Hall was impossible to copy), When Harry Met Sally is perhaps best known for its little moments (the fake orgasm, for instance), and bits of dialogue ("high maintenance"), than for the whole. Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) start as enemies, but despite the fact that Harry says men and women can't be friends, they strike up a friendship years later. They talk, watch Casablanca on TV, and complain about other relationships, and, eventually things escalate. It ends at a New Year's Eve party, making it, of course, one of the best of all New Year's films. Crystal has, arguably, never been better, while Ryan set herself up for a run as "America's Sweetheart." Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are very funny as the prototypical "best friend" characters, whose total existence revolves around the main characters' love lives. Nora Ephron received an Oscar nomination for her screenplay, and Rob Reiner directed with colorful crispness; Barry Sonnenfeld provided the cinematography before becoming a director himself. Harry Connick Jr. sang many of the soft jazz tunes on the soundtrack. read more...

The Shop Around the Corner (1940)

Ernst Lubitsch's masterpiece (remade in 1998 as You've Got Mail) takes place in a Hungarian shop during the Christmas holiday. Times are tough and the workers are intimidated by their stern boss Mr. Matuschek (Frank Morgan). So when Alfred Kralik (Jimmy Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) become secret pen-pals -- unbeknownst to each other -- they must deal with more than a few obstacles to find true love. This might be Lubitsch's gentlest work: sweetness mixed with a genuine sadness. Stewart and Sullavan are wonderful, and Warners' DVD presents them in a beautiful black-and-white DVD transfer. read more...
