Being John Malkovich (1999)

Being John Malkovich is wonderful and inspired weirdness. It's the feature directorial debut of Spike Jonze, who directed such classic music videos as the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" and Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet" and appeared in the recent Three Kings. Being John Malkovich shows that Jonze has got scrappy talent to burn, pacing this weird film well and styling it with a grimy look, sharp performances, and clearly shot action. read more...

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Together they travel to Las Vegas in 1971, where Duke has been assigned to cover a desert motorcycle race. But a drinking and drug binge causes him to miss most of the race. He tries to skip out on a trashed hotel room and an expensive bill when he learns that he has been assigned to another story, a district attorney/police convention, in another part of town. He blows this story too, due to another drinking and drug binge (although he manages to tape record most of his experience this time). In the end, he writes a book about the entire experience and what it meant in the grand scheme of things. read more...

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972)

Director Luis Buñuel's great The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) was re-released in a new print in 2000 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the master's birth. (Buñuel passed away in 1983.) If you do the math, you'll realize that he was 72 when he made this film, and his vicious and cynical wit had not dulled. Instead it attained a grace that only age could bring. read more...

The Acid House (1999)

Adapted by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) from his collection of short stories, The Acid House is a good drug/cult movie that assaults our jaded senses with a fuck-all intensity. It's made up of three short stories about the sludge of Scottish society. We meet: Bob, who loses everything he has in one day, meets God in a bar, and gets turned into a housefly; Johnny, who marries a no-good pregnant whore and passively accepts everything that comes to him; and Coco, who drops acid and switches personalities with a newborn baby. The Acid House is not for the easily offended. (Note that because the Scottish accents in this film are so thick, this movie is subtitled.) read more...
