Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

One thing that movies do better than any other art form is capture dream logic. And yet very few films and filmmakers have ever been able to do it properly; most resort to using strange imagery like dwarves and fuzzy filters or simply presenting the dream as reality, followed by the dreamer suddenly waking up in bed. read more...

Beauty and the Beast (1946)

Jean Cocteau is perhaps known primarily as a poet and a writer who became fascinated by cinema. One of his earliest attempts at film, Blood of a Poet (1930) was a random, plotless collection of bizarre images with more than just a hint of Luis Bunuel in their inspiration. read more...

Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl (2009)

Currently active at age 101, the legendary Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira (I'm Going Home, A Talking Picture) continues to deliver wonderfully thoughtful, reflective movies at the rate of one a year, even if their distribution in America remains spotty. Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl is my ninth Oliveira, and it's perhaps the sleekest and simplest of all his films, which is not to say that it's a trifle. Even at a pleasant 64 minutes, it savors classical beauties, reaches tremendous depths and comes in with a satisfying bite. read more...

I Lost My Body (2019)

This hand-drawn animated movie from France starts with genuine amazement, suggesting the promise of something we've never seen before. In I Lost My Body, a severed hand frees itself from a refrigerator in what appears to be a lab or a hospital, and with great effort (skittering on its fingertips), it eludes capture and escapes. Then the movie flashes back to the hand's owner, Naoufel (voiced by Hakim Faris) and things grow quite a bit more ordinary and predictable. As an ineffectual pizza delivery man, he falls in love with one of his customers, Gabrielle (voiced by Victoire Du Bois) and then takes a job at a woodshop to be near her. Shy and uncertain, he mostly just stalks her, and builds her an igloo on the roof of the building. The various saws and blades in the woodshop provide a clue as to what will happen to the hand. The animation is quite simple, and even rudimentary at times, which can be both refreshing and disappointing. read more...

The Fountain (2006)

Some will consider Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain a disaster, while others will cherish it. It's an awesome work, dazzlingly inventive, constantly surprising, and told with a minimum of showbiz hoopla; it seems entirely outside the current state of things. It may become a cult sci-fi item, belonging with other slightly out-of-step oddities like John Boorman's Zardoz (1974), David Lynch's Dune (1984), and Tarkovsky's Stalker (1979). read more...
