Swamp Thing (1982)

Based on a character created by Len Wein and Berni Wrightson, Swamp Thing was made before Alan Moore revitalized the DC comic book series, before Wes Craven made a box office name for himself with A Nightmare on Elm Street and before comic book/superhero movies really found their footing. And so it's a little uneven, teetering between good intentions and bad special effects, sophistication and amateurishness, maturity and childishness. But it's awfully likeable and definitely has a so-bad-it's-good quality. read more...

The Last Witch Hunter (2015)

If you thought witches quietly mixed potions and cast spells in their little hovels, think again. The witches in The Last Witch Hunter make a great deal of howling, crunching, clattering noise. The screen twitches and jumps along with it, in a great mess of jumbled, inky images and globby, writhing digital tree branches, or tendrils, or whatever they were supposed to be. In the prologue, and evil witch queen falls under the blade of warrior Kaulder (Vin Diesel) and curses him to eternal life. Eight hundred years later, he — of course — hunts witches. The one-dimensional bad guys snarl and cackle and fight the one-dimensional hero; Diesel plays a version of his Fast/Furious Dominic Toretto, an ultra-cool, know-it-all who doesn't need any help and is no fun to be around; sidekicks Rose Leslie and Elijah Wood have to try pretty hard. Yet the material is so paltry that not even Michael Caine can work his actorly magic (it recalls his helpless flailing in Jaws: The Revenge). Director Breck Eisner is known in some circles as the man behind one of the biggest money-losers in Hollywood history, Sahara (2005). Perhaps Eisner is cursed; this humorless sludgefest is just a loser, period. read more...

Suicide Squad (2016)

David Ayer's Suicide Squad seemed like it could have been special. It could have been the scrappy, colorful, irreverent bastard cousin to Zack Snyder's lumbering, sludgy Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice; it could have been a funny, nothing-at-stake joy like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Deadpool were for the Marvel Universe. But somehow, Suicide Squad is a disappointment. It has its fun parts, sure, but it goes on a little too long and feels ill-paced, and has a few other problems, and it eventually leaves off with a "meh" rather than a "wow." read more...

Blade II (2002)

Wesley Snipes returns as the daywalker, the half-vampire vampire slayer with the Clint Eastwood-like murmur. As in all sequels, we must up the stakes, so Blade teams up with his vampire enemies to fight off a new strain of mutant vampires with jaws that come unhinged (a la Alien). As directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Mimic and The Devil's Backbone) the action jumps back and forth between liquid, lickety-split kung fu to the industry standard quick-cut shaky cam, and it's all lifted from other movies (Dawn of the Dead, mostly). But it's so much adrenaline-pumped B-movie fun, it's nearly worth full price. read more...
