Food, Inc. (2009)

I can't think of a more urgent, day-by-day issue for a feature documentary than food. Directed by Robert Kenner, Food, Inc. plays a bit like a collection of greatest hits from Super Size Me, Fast Food Nation and King Corn. But the film's bright, cheerful tone, colorful graphics and bite-sized snippets will hopefully appeal to larger crowd, thereby spreading this vital information to new areas. read more...

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

In 1997, Clint Eastwood's film Absolute Power irked the Asian community for its thoughtless depiction of an insulting Asian stereotype, a waiter in a restaurant scene. Now, ten years later, Eastwood has completely redeemed any questions from that incident with this companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers, the flipside of the Iwo Jima conflict told entirely from the point of view of the Japanese. The film opened a few weeks ago in Japan, reportedly to enthusiastic response, prompting Warner Bros. to change the release date from February of 2007 to December, qualifying it for awards. read more...

Patton (1970)

It's hard to imagine Patton making a huge impact in 1970, in the middle of the Vietnam War and toward the end of the "Peace 'n' Love" era. But watching the movie, it's easy to see how Patton is not presented as an authority figure, but as an outcast, a rebel that constantly butts heads with colleagues and commanders. Moreover, George C. Scott's intuitive, powerhouse performance paints a complex picture of a steadfast soldier that believed firmly in reincarnation, colorful language, and the glories of war. read more...

Eight Men Out (1988)

With Eight Men Out (1988), John Sayles attempts to vindicate the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox," consisting of eight players accused of throwing the World Series. He paints them as poor, dumb working stiffs who have no power against the moguls in charge. Superstar "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (D.B. Sweeney) is not the center of attention here, and because of his lack of screen time he comes across as godlike and untouchable. Team owner Charles Comiskey (played by Clifton James) comes across as particularly cruel. Most of the focus is on Buck Weaver (John Cusack), who only had a cursory involvement in the scandal, and pitcher Eddie Cicotte (David Strathairn) who did not have many seasons left in his sore arm. read more...
