The New World: The Extended Cut (2008)

In December of 2005, I saw the 150-minute cut of The New World, which was screened for my critics group for awards consideration. The film as a whole didn't quite sink in until I saw the 135-minute cut a month or so later. I'm not sure if the shorter cut played better for me, or if it took a second viewing to cement the idea that this was a true masterpiece. Now New Line has released an "extended cut," running 172 minutes. My guess is that this new cut has nothing to do with director Terrence Malick. For one thing, it's specifically called an "extended cut," and not a "director's cut." And there's no information on the disc or anywhere else explaining how this cut came about. Malick is secretive and reclusive, but I'm sure that if this were his director's cut, it would be called the director's cut. read more...

Gertrud (1964)

When Gertrud was released, cinema had changed into a faster, hipper, younger medium, and the film was not welcomed. It was considered stuffy and slow. Only the French auteurists at Cahiers du Cinema and America's Andrew Sarris praised the film, and -- of course -- it turns out that they were right. Some priceless home-movie footage included on the DVD shows Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and actress Anna Karina fawning over the 70-something Dreyer at the movie's Paris premiere. read more...

Far from Heaven (2002)

The Melodrama genre is dead, deader even than the Western. We're too hip and ironic these days to swallow any portion of sentiment that's not properly salted. But in its day, the Melodrama ruled. Filmmakers like Vincente Minnelli and Nicholas Ray dabbled occasionally (Some Came Running and Bigger Than Life, respectively) while John M. Stahl (Back Street, Imitation of Life) cranked them out by the handful. But the genre has only one true master: Douglas Sirk. read more...

The Deep Blue Sea (2012)

The English filmmaker Terence Davies is best known for movies set in the past, reflecting memories of life and memories of movies. His feature debut, Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), was a masterpiece with a unique form. It moved in recollections and snatches of feeling, but shown fully frontal, in tableau, often accompanied by popular songs. read more...

Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl (2009)

Currently active at age 101, the legendary Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira (I'm Going Home, A Talking Picture) continues to deliver wonderfully thoughtful, reflective movies at the rate of one a year, even if their distribution in America remains spotty. Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl is my ninth Oliveira, and it's perhaps the sleekest and simplest of all his films, which is not to say that it's a trifle. Even at a pleasant 64 minutes, it savors classical beauties, reaches tremendous depths and comes in with a satisfying bite. read more...
