The Simpsons Movie (2007)

In an early episode of "The Simpsons," The Itchy and Scratchy Movie became a cultural event, opening to rave reviews, winning awards and earning a place in the cinematic canon and a spot in the hearts of movie lovers. (Lisa Simpson called it the greatest movie she'd ever seen.) As one of the two or three greatest television shows of all time, "The Simpsons" itself aspired to become a movie just as good. For years fans imagined what a Simpsons movie might be like -- as did hoards of screenwriters and producers -- and, inevitably, the cold hard reality is that The Simpsons Movie isn't the greatest movie of all time. read more...

Nurse Betty (2000)

It's all in the neck. Renee Zellweger can do wonders with hers. She crooks it to one side when she's happy or confused, and tenses it up when she's anxious. In the new film Nurse Betty she and her neck give one of the very best performances of the year 2000. read more...

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Director Taika Waititi returns from the smash success of Thor: Ragnarok in fine form, and with his sense of smoothly kooky comedy intact. Based on a novel by Christine Leunens, Jojo Rabbit certainly could be offensive to some, but for me it works beautifully, each moment bursting with playfulness (and impeccable timing), and yet never losing sight of kindness. It's so fleet-footed that it'll be worth multiple viewings to catch all the jokes, but also observant enough to slow down when the moment counts. Young Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) lives alone with his mother, Rosie (Scarlett Johansson), and dreams of being a Hitler youth, and even has Adolf himself (Waititi) as an encouraging imaginary friend. Soon he discovers that a Jewish girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) is living in a secret hiding place in their house. At first he tries "interviewing" her for a book on identifying Jews, for Nazi use, but she plies him with hilariously inaccurate information. Of course, the two soon come to love one another, and even though it's a foregone conclusion, it's immensely satisfying anyway. The entire cast is outstanding, especially Johansson as the upbeat mother, trying to hold it all together while her husband is "away," and Sam Rockwell is brilliantly funny as a wounded Nazi captain who has been transferred to a demeaning post, training Hitler Youths. Rebel Wilson and Stephen Merchant co-star, and with Archie Yates as Jojo's young Nazi pal, who, amazingly, steals almost all his scenes. read more...

Seven Psychopaths (2012)

The acclaimed Irish playwright Martin McDonagh won an Oscar for his short film Six Shooter (2005) and received a screenwriting nomination for his feature debut In Bruges (2008). With the terrific Seven Psychopaths he continues this mixture of crime and dark comedy, but this time he adds a layer of self-awareness, deconstructing both the writing process and the need for conflict (and/or violence) in writing. read more...

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Writer/director Wes Anderson's filmic worlds and his peculiarly funny, rhythmic dialogue are willfully artificial. This has led detractors to peg him as fake, spoiled, cutesy, precious, and quirky, as if nothing other than realism will do. read more...
