Kiss Me Deadly (1955)

Dashiell Hammett's hard-boiled detective The Continental Op made his fiction debut in 1929, and the more famous Sam Spade followed in 1930. Raymond Chandler followed in 1939 with the debut of Philip Marlowe. Movie versions of these were made throughout the 1940s. In 1947, another hard-boiled detective hit the scene, in a book called I, the Jury, by Mickey Spillane. Private eye Mike Hammer wasn't like the others; he was tougher, greedier, more lowdown, maybe not as bright... in a word, he was more primal. He struck a chord with readers and the Hammer books outsold their predecessors by huge amounts. read more...

The Two Faces of January (2014)

Author Patricia Highsmith's books have made some very good films, including Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (1951), Rene Clement's Purple Noon (1960), Wim Wenders' The American Friend (1977), Claude Chabrol's The Cry of the Owl (1987), and Liliana Cavani's Ripley's Game (2002). By far the most popular one, though, is Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), which is also the weakest of the batch. Now comes Hossein Amini's The Two Faces of January, which clearly comes closer to the Minghella film than to the others, probably for commercial reasons, but also likely because the late Minghella's estate was crucial in getting the movie made. read more...

Ulzana's Raid (1972)

Robert Aldrich's grungy, bleak Ulzana's Raid is today considered one of his best, and most underrated films, but it's also a product of its time; it's mainly a critique of the Vietnam War. (It has somehow not aged quite as gracefully as John Ford's The Searchers has.) Nevertheless, it has Aldrich's sure touch, and it's certainly an unusual example of the Western genre. It's very much worth seeing for those with strong stomachs. read more...
