Mission: Impossible (1996)

When I was about 4 or 5, I remember my dad religiously watching two television shows. One was "Star Trek" and the other was "Mission: Impossible." I liked to watch "Star Trek" with my dad, but my young brain was a little baffled by "Mission: Impossible." I do, however, remember the fuse lighting, and the theme music and the "this tape will self destruct in 5 seconds." read more...

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)

Tom Cruise has had a tough time of it lately. He was once, and for a good long while, one of the top movie stars in the world. Then he started behaving strangely, a bit too often, in public, and he seemed to have lost his clout. And yet, in truth, he has only been demoted to the status of a "normal" movie star. Of his last six films, three of them made over $100 million, and two more came fairly close. On Rotten Tomatoes, four of those same six films have "fresh" ratings. The next step is a movie for former Cruise fans to really love. And I think that Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol might be it. read more...

Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)

The first ten minutes of this movie are a monster blowout. We get the title, no credits, and the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" cranked up in Dolby Digital. Just as we start groovin', a building blows up, loud, right in the middle of a lyric. In minutes, John McClane (Bruce Willis) is being made to stand on a street corner in Harlem wearing a racially offensive sandwich board. Sure death. He is saved by Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson), they jump into a cab, race away, and we have a movie. read more...

Live Free or Die Hard (2007)

Shaky, choppy director Len Wiseman, of the two Underworld films, exceeds all expectations with this clean, exciting fourth Die Hard. It's about computer terrorism, but it feels like a throwback to the days of movies before computers, with actual cars blowing up and actual stunt men falling down shafts. read more...
