The Thin Red Line (1998)

Writer/director Terrence Malick's third film was a rumor for as long as anyone can remember. Then The Thin Red Line became a reality -- it existed, but it was a waiting game for it to be released. Finally the studio decided to get it out on December 25, to qualify for the 1998 Academy Awards. I saw it December 23, exhausted, but enraptured, excited for a mythical movie living up to its potential. read more...

Richard III (1955)

It's hard to imagine anyone better than Laurence Olivier playing the twisted, lurching, serpentine Richard III, a Shakespearian villain that might even give Iago the shakes. Richard is Duke of Gloucester, who is bent on stealing the crown from his brother Edward, and will stop at little to get it. read more...

There Will Be Blood (2007)

Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood is certainly impressive, but also a step back into the all-too conventional, and the least of his five films. It's based on Upton Sinclair's novel Oil!, which was published in 1927. Sinclair was more of a political writer than a creative writer; he apparently sent copies of some of his books to members of Congress. Because of this condescending, soapbox quality, his work has inevitably fallen out of fashion. Why dust off this creaky source material in 2007? Anderson undoubtedly found something resonant about it, which must invariably be political rather than personal. Perhaps he saw a connection between Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), scooping up all the oil in the Midwest and swindling anyone who gets in his way, and a lot of the suspicious oil activity that still goes on today. read more...

Chinatown (1974)

If Chinatown were made today, it would open instead with Gittes in the act of taking the photos of the guilty couple. He would accidentally make a noise and be noticed. He would run away, jump in his car and tear down the streets of Los Angeles, followed by another car whose occupants would be firing guns at him. He would drive on the sidewalk, knocking over a fruit cart, and maybe taking out a fire hydrant, showering innocent passersby with a stream of water. This would all happen during the opening credits and would be done with shaky cameras and about 2000 cuts. read more...
