    The Man from Laramie (1955)

The fifth of Anthony Mann's five Westerns with Jimmy Stewart (and the last of their eight movies together), The Man from Laramie looks more and more like the best of the lot. (Hard to pick, since they're all exceptional.) Mann incorporates all his usual expertise at combining real landscapes with the emotional conflict of his characters, but this time it includes a more intricate plot, and in fact, a kind of murder mystery. (It recalls his earlier, psychological Western, The Furies.) read more...

      Anonymous (2011)

The first thing anyone will ask or notice about Anonymous is that it's a movie about Shakespeare, directed by that untalented veteran of loud disaster movies (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, etc.), Roland Emmerich. read more...

        Argo (2012)

Ten years ago, actor Ben Affleck earned the scorn of critics and moviegoers alike with a series of foolish, misguided movies (Pearl Harbor, Gigli, etc.). Five years later, he delivered the perfect comeback with a superb directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone. His second feature, The Town (2010), proved that he was no fluke, and his third, the new Argo, proves that he's here to stay. read more...

          The Cotton Club (1984)

By the time Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club was released in theaters in December of 1984 its troubled production history had already been in the news, and most critics and viewers were prepared to receive it as a bomb. Thankfully Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert gave it a real chance on their show, and they both named it one of the ten best films of the year. I saw it a few months later, several times, probably on a grubby VHS tape, and loved it too. read more...

            The Guard (2011)

Back in the mid-1990s, there came an onslaught of coy crime films, all inspired by Pulp Fiction, though few of them were any good and none of them measured up to the original. Maybe it's because a generation has gone by, but now there appears to be a resurgence of these types of films, mostly from the UK and Australia. King among them was Martin McDonagh's In Bruges (2008), and now McDonagh's older brother John Michael McDonagh has done him one better with the awesome new The Guard. read more...
