Basic Instinct (1992)

Paul Verhoeven's sex mystery worked only if you turned off your brain completely and watched from below the waist. (Too many people took this movie too seriously.) And it actually works in a nasty, tasteless sort of way. read more...

And Then There Were None (1945)

French director Rene Clair (who falls just shy of "master" status) made the outstanding And Then There Were None (1945) during his Hollywood years. Ten guests in an island house getknocked off one by one, each suspecting the other of being the murderer. Clair mostly uses character actors (Walter Huston, Mischa Auer, C. Aubrey Smith, Judith Anderson, etc.) to flesh out the roles, making them all the more potent. The director then perfectly disguises the murderer for those who aren't familiar with the story, and I was guessing all the way up until the end. VCI Entertainment's DVD release is bargain basement stuff, but well worth the tiny price tag. Dudley Nichols wrote the screenplay, based, of course, on the novel by Agatha Christie. read more...

Killer Joe (2012)

The problem with William Friedkin is that he was the biggest director in the world for a couple of years. The success he had with The French Connection (1971) and The Exorcist (1973) in terms of critical acclaim, Oscars, and box office was unparalleled. Not even Coppola, Spielberg, or Lucas had reached that level yet. That kind of bigness can only lead to a fall. But the catch is that his downfall is mostly perceived or imagined. Even forty years later, every new release is compared unfavorably to those two successes, rather than taken upon its own merits. The truth is that Friedkin has continued with a consistently interesting career, and hardly anyone has noticed. read more...

Dressed to Kill (1980)

I often have a hard time defending my admiration for Brian De Palma. In this country he's considered a rip-off artist who pillages from Hitchcock, Kubrick, Antonioni and Michael Powell, as well as a misogynist and a violent creep. It gets especially difficult when discussing such obvious turkeys as The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) and last year's Mission to Mars. read more...

Suspicion (1941)

Cary Grant stars as a suave playboy who swoops into shy Joan Fontaine's life. They marry and Fontaine begins to suspect that her new husband is a murderer and that she may be his next target. Grant was arguably Hitchcock's greatest leading man, harboring a hint of darkness under his slick, charming facade, but his implicit star power kept him from actually being the murderer. (The fans would never stand for it.) Hitchcock later complained about this conundrum in the famous "Hitchcock/Truffaut" book. read more...
