X-Men (2000)

When I was twelve or thirteen years old, I read The X-Men comic book fervently. Even back then there was talk of a movie, and I used to daydream about it and imagine what it would be like. Now the movie is finally here, and while I watched it it enveloped me like the distant haze of a dream. But my grown-up critical mind kicked in as well, and told me to tell you that the new X-Men, though a fairly satisfying experience, is an enterprise designed for fans only. read more...

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Certainly Spider-Man 3 contains some of the most joyously nutty sequences ever to grace a summer blockbuster. But it also succumbs to overkill and special effects ennui, as too many plotlines and superfolks jostle for screen space. Let's begin with the private life of Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire). His true love Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) is having second thoughts about their relationship (her career isn't going well and Peter doesn't notice). Peter's classmate, the beautiful Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard), makes Mary Jane jealous. Peter's uncle's real killer Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church) has just escaped prison. And Peter's job at the Daily Bugle is in jeopardy because of a new freelance photographer Eddie Brock (Topher Grace). read more...

The Wolverine (2013)

One of the hardest things about reviewing movies is being objective, especially if one is familiar with and fond of original source material. For example, I love the four-issue "Wolverine" comic book mini-series written by Chris Claremont, drawn by Frank Miller and published in 1982. This is one of my all-time favorite comics. James Mangold's new movie The Wolverine is more or less based on this series, but almost completely changed. Claremont doesn't even get a "story by" credit. read more...

X2: X-Men United (2003)

Perhaps the most amazing thing about the new sequel X2, subtitled X-Men United, is that it's made strictly for comic book fans; the rest of the world is not invited. For that reason -- because it hasn't been stretched thin to accommodate first-timers -- it may be the best super-hero movie yet made. read more...
