Brief Encounter (1945)

How extraordinary that such a simple, unassuming little film could work such powerful magic over so many people for so many generations. David Lean's film contained no big stars, and its two actors were both middle-aged and not inordinately attractive. No sets were more ornate than a train platform café, and nothing in the writing came anywhere close to a great speech or a breakthrough moment. read more...

Blue Valentine (2010)

Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine is the kind of movie that John Cassavetes may have dreamt about. It's a mature work for mature audiences, and it doesn't particularly care if teen boys are interested. It's focused on characters and behavior rather than plot. Even more importantly, it's not entirely focused on characters, but also conjures up a kind of visual scheme, or else, why make a movie at all when a play would be much cheaper? read more...

Away from Her (2007)

At its most basic level, Away from Her is a disease-of-the-week flick that stares uncomfortably into the face of Alzheimer's disease and it's heartbreaking affect on everyone who comes into contact with it. But on a higher level, this is a graceful, astonishingly brave film from actress Sarah Polley (The Sweet Hereafter, Dawn of the Dead), making her directorial debut. Moreover, it's a thankless work that will face an uphill battle followed by almost certain oblivion. read more...

Mean Streets (1973)

Director Martin Scorsese is considered by many to be the greatest living American film director. His acknowledged masterworks are Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), and GoodFellas (1990). But I contend that Mean Streets (1973) is his greatest work and his most underappreciated. read more...

Citizen Kane (1941)

As probably the 1,000th writer to try and tackle Citizen Kane in print, I have no idea where to start. That this film has been routinely voted as the greatest ever made -- beginning with the 1962 Sight & Sound poll and most recently in the 1998 AFI poll -- has probably put off several viewers who have never seen it. After all, if it's the greatest film ever made, it has to be good for you. And if it's good for you, it probably isn't any fun at all. read more...
