Certified Copy (2011)

After a decade's worth of experiments with video (Ten, Five Dedicated to Ozu, Shirin, etc.), the great Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami returns to the commercial fold, and this time with a genuine international movie star, Juliette Binoche, helping out (she also appeared briefly in Shirin). Theoretically, this could be Kiarostami's "selling out" or else his most accessible movie to date, but instead it's one of his most deliriously puzzling. Most viewers -- especially those that demand answers from their movies -- will walk away not knowing what to make of it. But if you allow more than one possibility to this scenario, it emerges as a masterpiece, and Kiarostami's best film since The Wind Will Carry Us (1999). read more...

I'm Not There (2007)

Jean-Luc Godard once said that the best way to critique films was to make one. Director Todd Haynes did precisely this with Far from Heaven (2002), which more or less used a Douglas Sirk framework to discuss Sirk's films as well as a more modern look at racism and homophobia. Now Haynes does it again with his exceptional new I'm Not There, a deconstruction of the biopic as well as a fascinating look at the cult of celebrity, and, on a deeper level, the celebrity as a godlike being with answers to all our questions. Whereas most biopics are made solely for the purpose of providing a rich centerpiece role (and, hopefully, an Oscar) for an ambitious actor, Haynes deliberately subverts this by casting seven different actors -- of all different ages, races and even sexes -- to play Bob Dylan. read more...

Mysteries of Lisbon (2011)

The Chilean-born filmmaker Raoul Ruiz passed away this August at the age of 70, leaving behind a sometimes awesome, sometimes baffling set of films. Mysteries of Lisbon is one of his latest, though not his last. It's being shown in the U.S. in a 4-1/2 hour version, edited down from a six-episode TV mini-series. read more...

Goodbye to Language 3D (2014)

Now eighty-three years old, Jean-Luc Godard has decided to make his first 3D feature; I read somewhere that he went to see Piranha 3D and it inspired him to make this. It's a delicious image, the crusty old genius sitting in a multiplex, wearing funny glasses and perhaps even eating popcorn. Regardless of whether or not it's true, the old master seems in a more playful mood this time out. Goodbye to Language 3D is only 70 minutes long, as baffling as anything he has ever made, but those moments and thoughts that jut out from the screen seem so feisty now, as if his movie were a batch of piranha devouring whatever ideas we might have had about what cinema is, should be, or can be. read more...
