Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America (1992)

Craig Baldwin's amazing film finally, finally gets its official DVD release, long after the supposed end of the world. Cobbled together from bits of sci-fi movies, Mexican films, newsreels, educational films and anything else rescued from a waste bin or stolen from television, this 48-minute wonder begins with aliens from the planet Quetzalcoatl. After the destruction of their planet, they take refuge under Earth's surface, where they remain peacefully until underground nuclear testing destroys their way of life. read more...

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)

It tells a story so odd that it almost couldn't be true. It begins with Frenchman named Thierry Guetta, who obsessively begins documenting his life with a video camera. The movie hints that he's afraid of missing something and wants to capture absolutely everything on video. Thierry becomes fascinated with his cousin, a famous graffiti artist named "Space Invader," and begins filming the artist's exploits, pasting up signs in the dead of night. From there, Thierry naturally meets other graffiti artists, who, we learn, travel the world to tag international walls with their signature art. Among them is the American Shepard Fairey, who is known for his "Andre the Giant" and "Obey" stickers. read more...

Mr. Arkadin (1955)

Of the thirteen finished, released films that Orson Welles directed, only two were written directly for the screen and not based on any other material, Citizen Kane and Mr. Arkadin. Many critics have noticed the connection between the two: a flashback structure, a third party snooping around in the past life of a great figure. But the two films are markedly different. Mr. Arkadin (a.k.a. Confidential Report) is pulpier and more deliberately flashy, and at the same time it suffers badly from its technical shortcomings. The sound is horrid, and the film stock on even the best prints makes sickening jumps with each edit. And yet it's still a spectacular film, a complete and total Orson Welles film with his unique fingerprints all over it. I wouldn't swap it for a dozen other films. read more...

Three Kings (1999)

George Clooney stars in this highly unusual, ultra-modern war movie. He plays Archie Gates, a soldier stationed in Iraq at the tail end of the Gulf War. Accompanied by Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg), Chief Elgin (Ice Cube), and Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze), he sets off to plunder a cache of gold (stolen by Saddam Hussein from Kuwait). But the soldiers find themselves in a situation where they must help a group of Iraqi civilians being terrorized by their own army. read more...

Bowling for Columbine (2002)

Documentarian Michael Moore takes on America's love for guns in this scathing, hilarious, infuriating and ultimately disturbing film. Moore appears onscreen and blatantly manipulates his material for maximum emotional effect, including a carefully edited confrontation with Charlton Heston. But no matter. His point comes across loud and clear. The opening scene shows Moore opening a bank account and getting a free rifle, and it stays on track from there. Biggest surprise: humanitarian words from Marilyn Manson. Oscar winner for Best Documentary. read more...
