Thank You for Smoking (2006)

Most social/political satires forget to balance character with plot, or worse, the thin jokes collapse under the pressure of an easy, likeable third-act conclusion. But the new Thank You for Smoking deftly avoids all these pitfalls, checking in as a well-rounded and hilariously direct satire. After a series of short films, writer/director Jason Reitman -- son of Ivan (Ghostbusters) Reitman -- makes his big screen debut with this story of a tobacco lobbyist, Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart). read more...

Election (1999)

Election is about a twisted, backstabbing run for political office amongcandidates who are self-centered and slightly dim. No, this isn't the Democratsand the Republicans. This is high school. Reese Witherspoon stars in perhaps her very best performance as Tracy Flick, the go-getter who must succeed in everything come hell or high water. read more...

Dr. Strangelove (1964)

Has Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb aged badly? I mean, the cold war is over. Communism is dead, and the Russians are no longer our enemies. What I had loved about Dr. Strangelove when I saw it as a teenager in the 80's was that it had seemed timeless. It made valid points that were pertinent to my generation. But what about now, in the 90's? How does Dr. Strangelove hold up? read more...

The Man in the White Suit (1951)

In Alexander Mackendrick's The Man in the White Suit (1951), Alec Guinness plays feverish inventor Sidney Stratton, working innocuous jobs in textile mills so that he can sneak into their laboratories to work on his invention: a completely stain-resistant, wear-resistant fabric. Unfortunately, instead of changing the world, he discovers that the garment industry as a whole wants to suppress his product. Mackendrick -- who later worked with Guinness in The Ladykillers and went on to make Sweet Smell of Success -- directs with a keen eye on shadows and spaces for more pronounced comic effect. read more...

The Heartbreak Kid (1972)

Elaine May directs this uncomfortable comedy with uncanny skill and intelligence, magically balancing the story of a poor schmuck (Charles Grodin) who suddenly realizes he's married the wrong girl (Jeannie Berlin) when he falls madly for a blonde, man-eating goddess (Cybill Shepherd) -- during his honeymoon. (Like May's other films, it tells the story of a betrayal between a couple.) Using comedy, pathos and a hint of tragedy, May somehow coaxes us along with a sense of truth, and though the result may not exactly be a classic romantic comedy, it's certainly an outstanding movie. This is the second of only four movies that May directed in her extraordinary career. read more...
