The French Connection (1971)

One of my favorite movie trivia games consists of trying to find a modern-day actor who has never played a cop. Try it -- it's hard. Robert De Niro? Sorry. He played a cop in Cop Land. Al Pacino? No dice. He was a cop on De Niro's trail in Heat. What this means is that we as a people love our cop movies. The cop movie, like any other genre, has traveled through cycles. Up through the 1960s, cop movies were slow and thoughtful with a little action thrown in for good measure, as in Madigan, Coogan's Bluff, and Bullitt (all 1968). But in 1971, cop movies took a drastic turn, becoming grittier and faster and more violent. The French Connection was the first and most notable of these. read more...

Piñero (2001)

While most biopics come across as puffy and self-important like a hefty hardback novel, the new film PiƱero seems like it's scrawled in blank verse on the back of a greasy paper bag -- and that's a compliment. read more...

Raging Bull (1980)

As many have said, it's not really about boxing; the boxing sequences have little to do with reality, but cinematically they explode. They move gorgeously and pulse like a hammering heartbeat. Scorsese and editor Themla Schoonmaker broke new ground with their rhythmic editing, using punches and flashbulbs as beats, as well as slow motion, over-cranking, and tons of other techniques. Each of the movie's boxing matches is practically characters in themselves. read more...

Starred Up (2014)

English director David Mackenzie (Young Adam, Mister Foe) has never made films that were easy to watch or easy to like, but with Starred Up, he seems to have found some kind of balance at last. As it begins, with its hard, unflinching look at a prisoner transferred to an adult institution, it might recall Steve McQueen's very tough Hunger (2008), but though Starred Up always retains its edge, it finds a sympathetic heart as well. read more...

All the President's Men (1976)

Alan J. Pakula's All the President's Men (1976) gambled on the fact that men talking on phones, scribbling in notepads and typing could be exciting -- and won. No political thriller made today would have the courage to strip its story to the bare bones; instead, it would have to be padded out with sneering, cackling bad guys, guns, chases and escapes. (Sydney Pollack's recent The Interpreter would be a disgraceful example.) It helps that All the President's Men has at its core one hell of a story, and a true one at that. It was fresh off the presses, just three years from actual events, to book, to movie. read more...
