Thelma (2017)

An intense quasi-companion piece to this year's Raw, the Norwegian Thelma is a supernatural thriller that isn't afraid to venture into some dark territory. Directed and co-written by Joachim Trier (the excellent Oslo, August 31st), Thelma focuses on a young woman (Eili Harboe) who goes to college and experiences a kind of awakening, in more ways than one. Initially shy and awkward — she is religious and doesn't drink — she meets the pretty Anja (Kaya Wilkins, credited as "Okay Kaya") and immediately experiences a kind of seizure. Thelma and Anja begin a close friendship, with Thelma slowly beginning to blossom, even beginning to drink and smoke, while attempting to determine the origin of the seizures. With a true sense of quiet and patience, Trier slowly unfolds several flashbacks, throwing light on the situation, while unveiling grave surprises and heading toward a stark but satisfying conclusion. read more...

Häxan (1922)

Directed by Danish filmmaker Benjamin Christensen, this bizarre silent film begins as a documentary about witches but turns into a real, honest-to-goodness horror film with scary images of devils, possessions, evil spells, and more. Häxan (1922) is perhaps one of the earliest attempts to break the rules, mixing fact, fiction, and opinion, and concluding with a condemnation of the hysteria of witch-hunts. In a final, bizarre touch, Christensen cast himself as the Devil. The 2019 Criterion Blu-ray release offers the full-length 105-minute silent version with music by the Czech Film Orchestra, as well as a 1968 edited version called Witchcraft Through the Ages, running only 76 minutes, and featuring music by Jean-Luc Ponty and narration by William S. Burroughs. Both are highly recommended. read more...

Saint Maud (2021)

This incredible horror film popped up at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, but, due to COVID-19 didn't arrive in U.S. theaters until January of 2021. Saint Maud (2021) is the feature writing and directing debut of Rose Glass, from the UK, and it's one of the great portraits of obsession from an interior point of view; it's perhaps something along the lines of Polanski's Repulsion, but it's a searing indictment of religious fervor, rather than moral. After failing to save a patient with CPR, a nurse has changed her name to Maud (Morfydd Clark), become deeply Catholic, and works as a palliative care nurse. Her patient is Amanda Köhl (Jennifer Ehle), a noted American dancer and choreographer. After a seeming moment of connection, Maud becomes determined to convert Amanda before she passes. What follows are moments of Maud being humiliated, while desperately searching for signs or help from God to show her the way. The movie eerily reflects her state of mind with its confident, unwavering tone, teetering just on the edge of realism, drawn toward nightmarish longing. read more...
