Evolution (2016)

This strange, austere sci-fi art film will likely engage viewers looking for something different, but for most, it's a queasy, unsettlingly weird experience, requiring much patience for little reward. read more...

Sátántangó (1994)

What is Sátántangó? Film buffs know that it's a 7-hour, black-and-white film, in Hungarian with English subtitles. For years it has been one of those movie "fish stories"; the few that have seen it get boasting rights, not only that they managed to find it, but that they had the endurance to watch the whole thing. But what is it about, and is it actually a good movie beyond its form and length? read more...

Rebels of the Neon God (1992)

Over the past few decades, Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang has made some of the strangest and most fascinating films in the world, including The River (1997), What Time Is It There? (2001), and Goodbye Dragon Inn (2004). But for whatever reason, his debut feature, Rebels of the Neon God (1992), has never been released in the United States until now. A 2015 restoration, part of a retrospective of Tsai's work, has been making its way around the country. For Tsai's fans, it's both happily familiar and slightly disappointing; it shows the director already tackling some of his favorite themes, but also not yet fully-formed. Yet for fans of arthouse cinema, it's easily the most interesting thing to come along in some time. read more...

The Real Joan of Arc (2008)

Martin Meissonnier directed this French, made-for-TV documentary, which pokes holes in the Joan of Arc legend. Interviewing various scholars and experts, the film implies that men, rather than God, prepared Joan for the task of leading the French to victory against the English in the 15th century. It paints Joan as more of a figurehead than an actual leader, and argues that she was actually a good deal older than the legend says (which gave her more time to learn how to ride horses, fight and lose her rural dialect). Moreover, it proposes the theory that Joan was not even burned at the stake, and that she resurfaced later and even married. read more...

Staying Vertical (2017)

Alain Guiraudie's earlier work Stranger by the Lake was constantly intriguing, and his new film, Staying Vertical (or, Rester vertical), placed on the Cahiers du cinéma list of the ten best films of 2016, so of course I wanted to see it. Sadly, and surprisingly, it left me quite cold. It's a movie in which characters seem to be doing things, speaking to each other, but no one ever seems alive. It's more like empty, lifeless manipulation of puppets than it is anything emotional or engaging. read more...
