Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990)

The sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch is actually better than the original Gremlins (1984) in many ways: it's darker and more cynical, contains more pop culture references and takes on a bigger target -- corporate greed in New York City. John Glover stars as the thinly veiled Donald Trump character named Daniel Clamp; their logo is a giant "C" crushing the world into an oval shape. Billy (Zach Galligan) and Kate (Phoebe Cates) now work for Clamp, but still hold on to their small town sensibilities. When Gizmo's Chinatown home gets bulldozed to make way for a Chinatown-like strip mall, Gizmo finds his way back into Billy's hands. Before long, the slimy green guys are back. But this time, the electronically-rigged and constantly malfunctioning Clamp building is even more of a nemesis than the creatures. This time Dante hired Chuck Jones to animate an opening sequence (with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck) and hired the great Christopher Lee to play a scientist. Plus Dick Miller returns in his original role to help fight the green beasties. Gremlins 2 only played for a week at my local theater, but it was my favorite movie of that summer. Steven Spielberg executive produced. read more...

Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

Vampire in Brooklyn is considered one of Wes Craven's worst movies, but it doesn't really seem like it's his fault. It feels like a vanity project for star Eddie Murphy, who co-wrote it with his brother Charlie and co-produced. He probably had final say in certain areas; for example, in addition to playing the lead vampire Maximillian (with a Caribbean accent), he wears disguises and plays a preacher and an Italian gangster, using different makeup and voices for each. Also, it's known that this was Murphy's final film in his long contract with Paramount, and he might have just been trying to get the heck out. read more...

The Nutty Professor (1963)

For decades, Jerry Lewis has been the butt of jokes having to do with the French. Despite his particular genius onscreen, and his technical prowess offscreen as an innovative Hollywood director, most Americans have written him off as if to say, "if the French love him so much, they can have him." read more...

Vampire Academy (2014)

The Waters brothers, screenwriter Daniel (Heathers) and director Mark (Mean Girls), are no strangers to this kind of material. And even though Vampire Academy is very clearly meant to capitalize on franchises like Twilight, Harry Potter, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Waters brothers are more interested in creating something snappy and irreverent. It's not a bad spoof, like Vampires Suck, but rather its own welcome entity. read more...

Scooby-Doo! and Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery (2015)

There's something so very satisfyingly campy and culty about this teaming up of two decades-old icons, neither of which seems to have lost any of their popularity over many generations. By now we know that Scooby-Doo has returned in many forms since his TV debut in 1969: different cartoon series, as a puppy, live-action feature films, direct-to-video films, and even puppets. Meanwhile, the rock band KISS, whose first album was in 1974 and probably should have faded away around 1979, has endured, with new members, and with and without makeup. read more...
