Fahrenheit 11/9 (2018)

Michael Moore's latest non-fiction movie is a proudly subjective patchwork, scampering in many different directions, but it's also by far his most vital, cautionary, and urgent work; it's unmissable. read more...

Bowling for Columbine (2002)

Documentarian Michael Moore takes on America's love for guns in this scathing, hilarious, infuriating and ultimately disturbing film. Moore appears onscreen and blatantly manipulates his material for maximum emotional effect, including a carefully edited confrontation with Charlton Heston. But no matter. His point comes across loud and clear. The opening scene shows Moore opening a bank account and getting a free rifle, and it stays on track from there. Biggest surprise: humanitarian words from Marilyn Manson. Oscar winner for Best Documentary. read more...

One journalist compares sorting through "fake news" to "bathing in garbage," and indeed, the documentary After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News is a very tough sit, but it also offers tools for viewers to begin identifying this poison. read more...

The Battle of Algiers (1965)

On Sept. 11, 2001 I had two things on my schedule, one was a press conference for the Mill Valley Film Festival, which was cancelled, and the other was a screening of Gillo Pontecorvo's The Wide Blue Road (1957), which was not. "We won't let Osama shut us down," boasted the folks at the Roxie Cinema, who later premiered the revival of Pontecorvo's Technicolor story of life in a fishing village. It's perhaps appropriate that another Pontecorvo film -- the great The Battle of Algiers -- should be re-released in this post-9/11 world, a startling and still-potent view of the double standard of war. read more...

Touch of Evil (1958)

Touch of Evil, which was written and directed by, and stars Orson Welles, has been slowly gaining a following over the years. Now Universal has decided that the time is right for a re-release. But this is no ordinary re-release. The Bay Area's own Walter Murch (Oscar winner for Apocalypse Now and The English Patient) has re-edited the movie into the version Welles had envisioned. It's one of the truly great works of the American cinema, and it shows just what kind of excellence movies are capable of. read more...
