Baby Driver (2017)

It's no wonder that Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino are friends. They have something in common that the many Tarantino wannabes do not; they share a powerful enthusiasm for film. They genuinely love the ways that good films can feel and move and sound, and that excitement is captured and re-broadcasted to the audience. It's a gift that few have. read more...

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

It's not enough for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) to have simply survived her first Hunger Games. She also has to be the "chosen one," and lead a revolution against the evil and corrupt President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and his followers. Too bad that doesn't actually happen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. That event will be saved for the sequel(s) to come. What happens here instead seems to be just a stopover, or a holding pattern. This movie cooks up a ridiculous excuse to get Katniss and her pals to play the game again, even though they were supposed to be finished. read more...

Bullfighter and the Lady (1951)

Filmmaker Budd Boetticher was once an athlete who traveled to Mexico, fell in love with bullfighting and trained to be a matador himself. This led to a job as a consultant on the movie Blood and Sand (1941), which led to a filmmaking career of his own. The opportunity to make Bullfighter and the Lady, produced by John Wayne and loosely based on his own story, must have been a dream for him. Indeed, it was on this film that he decided to use "Budd" instead of "Oscar." read more...
