Get on Up (2014)

The biopic about James Brown was only inevitable, I suppose, though it's a good thing that Chadwick Boseman landed the role of the Godfather of Soul in Get on Up. He's magnificent, and effortlessly conveys an awesome performance energy throughout the movie. (Boseman also played Jackie Robinson in last year's underrated 42.) Like nearly any major Hollywood biopic it's this centerpiece performance that drives the movie. read more...

    Creed (2015)

Since 2008, studios have been increasingly reluctant to spend money on movies with anything slightly resembling an original idea. Not they they were terribly brave before the market crash, but in the years since they managed to pull their cards even closer to their chests. Even so, clever filmmakers — as they have always done — have found ways to express creativity within the system. One of these ways is to inject new life into long-running franchises. This year, George Miller did miraculous things with Mad Max: Fury Road. In 2013, Shane Black somehow snuck subversive themes about the emptiness of action movies into his Iron Man 3. And Sam Mendes gave James Bond an exquisite new artistry and depth in Skyfall (2012). Now the Oakland-born filmmaker Ryan Coogler has worked more miracles with the 40 year-old Rocky series. read more...

    True Grit (2010)

I haven't seen more than a couple clips of the original True Grit (1969), but from what I can tell, the new remake sticks pretty close to the same dialogue and situations, and even some of the staging. However, it's very easy to tell that this new one is by far the better film. The original was directed by Henry Hathaway, an interesting filmmaker without much personality. The new one is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, whose compositions have a very unique rhythm and feel. Despite the source novel and the original film, this one feels precisely like a pure Coen brothers film; they have taken everything that came before and made it their own. read more...

    Run for Cover (1955)

In the video age, Run for Cover has been one Nicholas Ray's more obscure movies, which is especially odd, given that it came between Johnny Guitar (1954) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and featured such a huge star as James Cagney. But now it has at last been restored and released to DVD, and also a gorgeous Blu-ray, by Olive Films. read more...

    The Cotton Club (1984)

By the time Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club was released in theaters in December of 1984 its troubled production history had already been in the news, and most critics and viewers were prepared to receive it as a bomb. Thankfully Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert gave it a real chance on their show, and they both named it one of the ten best films of the year. I saw it a few months later, several times, probably on a grubby VHS tape, and loved it too. read more...
