Shame (2011)

Despite the heavy graphic content, Shame is far from a porn film. Director Steve McQueen (Hunger) presents this material in a respectful, artistic manner, favoring long takes and spare dialogue. The quiet, moody film focuses more on a character's behavior than on a plot or a conclusion. Rather than a stern treatise on the dangers of sexual addiction, McQueen's approach allows viewers to enter into the situation at their own pace, and find their own emotional connection. read more...

Venus in Fur (2014)

Throughout his entire career, from his feature debut Knife in the Water (1962) to the recent Carnage (2011), director Roman Polanski has specialized in wringing psychological tension from just a few characters (or one character) who are stuck and coming to pieces within limited spaces. In Venus in Fur, that place happens to be in the theater, and because it's based on a play by David Ives, some viewers may find it too stagy or stagebound. However, Polanski does not use the theater setting like a stage, and Venus in Fur moves very much like a movie, and a highly skilled one. read more...

Quills (2000)

It makes sense that brilliant San Francisco director Philip Kaufman would follow up his films The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) and Henry and June (1990) with another intelligent erotic film. Quills explores the world of the Marquis de Sade, a writer Henry Miller would surely have identified with. As the Marquis, Geoffrey Rush manages to balance madness, obsession, and brilliance with a fine thread tying it all together. read more...

Crash (1996)

David Cronenberg's latest film has offended many, was blown off by many and was praised by a brave few. The Cannes Film Festival gave it a special award for "Originality, Daring and Audacity," after the audience booed it. But it's a vintage Cronenberg film, no different than his other explorations into mortality and the crude stuff that makes up human beings. read more...

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1990)

Peter Greenaway's biggest hit and most straightforward film was one of the best films of 1990 with its colorful and depraved look at a secret love tryst in a snooty restaurant. Helen Mirren plays the thief's wife who leaves the table for meetings with her lover (Alan Howard). The most unforgettable moment has them hiding out naked in a truck full of rotting meat and maggots. Greenaway's innovative camera steals the film, roaming horizontally back and forth along the walls of the various colored rooms. Most of Greenaway's films fall right over the edge with their disturbing pretensions, but The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover manages to mesh a wicked sense of humor with a vivid sense of horror, with enough closeted poetry left over that scholars can read anything into it. Tim Roth also stars. read more...
