Alien³ (1992)

Former TV commercial and music video maker David Fincher made his feature directorial debut with Alien 3, which was received in the summer of 1992 without much enthusiasm. Fincher had the audacity to kill off little Newt in the film's opening minutes, and failed to anticipate the mysterious power that Cameron holds over Hollywood and moviegoers alike. (The general perception was that, since his film was not Aliens, it was not any good.) But it's an amazing film on many levels, switching 180 degrees to a grungy, dreary mood, with a bald Ripley holding court on a remote men's prison planet (where she crash lands). Here she's even more wary and guarded, dealing with the loss of her "child" and with her own "pregnancy." read more...

Land of the Dead (2005)

Stanley Kramer (The Defiant Ones, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?) made films about society's social ills and won widespread critical acclaim. George A. Romero also makes films about society's social ills, except that he incorporates zombies, bikers and vampires. As a result, his films and his career have been unfairly marginalized. read more...

The Last Exorcism (2010)

Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) has been preaching since he was a child, and now no longer believes in what he's saying. As part of his job, he performs "exorcisms," which are fake and designed to bring nothing more than peace of mind. Fed up with the lies, he invites a documentary crew to film his latest performance, on a "possessed" teen, Nell (Ashley Bell). Unfortunately, his ceremony doesn't work and trouble continues with scary threats and violent attacks. Cotton believes that the haunting is man-made, but eventually things get a little too weird to entirely discount a supernatural influence. read more...

M (1931)

Even after 75 years, Fritz Lang's first German talkie works beautifully as a carefully constructed thriller and police procedural. Child murderer Hans Beckert (Peter Lorre) causes a citywide panic with his crafty methods and cryptic messages to the press. The police step up their investigations to such a degree that they interfere with the day-to-day dealings of the criminal underworld. So the criminals take it upon themselves to catch the killer so that they can get back to business. read more...

Day of the Dead (1985)

In this third part of George A. Romero's zombie trilogy (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, etc.), more zombies roam the earth, and humans now live as part of a military installation in an underground bunker. A scientists capture a zombie, name it "Bub" and try to jog its human memories by giving it a Walkman and teaching it to shave. Darker and more contained than the first two, as well as more anxious (with lots of shouting and arguing), the movie furiously emphasizes the dividing line between man's dual, dueling natures: violence and rational thought. This is one film that deserves a second look. (It is reportedly the director's personal favorite.) read more...
