Prick Up Your Ears (1987)

Stephen Frears' Prick Up Your Ears is still one of the better examples of a filmed biopic, focusing on one dramatic aspect of a famous person's life, rather than a cradle-to-grave compressing of an entire existence. Rebellious, swaggering playwright Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) shocked audiences with his plays during his brief 34 years, but this movie focuses mainly on his long-term relationship with Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina), who was seemingly his polar opposite, fastidious and dissatisfied. (Both performances are excellent.) Orton did what he wanted, and took lovers on the side, but he and Kenneth lived together, fought, and were seemingly inseparable. Screenwriter Alan Bennett and director Frears don't shy away from the domestic details (rare and courageous, I might add, for 1987), and they create a vivid, prickly, and sometimes funny relationship. Wallace Shawn plays a present day writer who is researching Orton after his death, and Vanessa Redgrave plays Orton's agent. On their TV show, Siskel and Ebert both chose this as one of the year's ten best films. Olive Films released it on Blu-ray in 2015. read more...

Tabu (2012)

Portuguese director Miguel Gomes last played around with narrative and presentation in Our Beloved Month of August, starting his movie about a failed attempt to film a huge screenplay, turning into a documentary-like film, and then slowly morphing back into a fictional tale of romance. His movie Tabu takes similar liberties with time, place and reality, to powerful effect. read more...

Fallen Angels (1995)

Wong Kar-wai's most stylistically dense film (and my favorite), Fallen Angels, is said to be an unofficial sequel -- or at least a companion piece -- to Chungking Express, a third chapter for that film that didn't quite fit. It, too, follows a series of lost, sad characters who can't ever seem to relate. read more...

Birth (2004)

Taken out of context, Jonathan Glazer's Birth comes with a few disturbing scenes: a grown man smacking a young boy and slamming him into a piano, and the same boy stepping naked into a bathtub with a grown woman. In context however, Birth's delicate spell keeps these moments superbly in check; they merely play as part of a story without a breath of displacement or shock. read more...

Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013)

Director Abdellatif Kechiche, who was born in Tunisia and raised in France, made one of the most highly acclaimed movies of the last decade there, The Secret of the Grain (2007). It was a slow-paced, thoughtful movie that took time to watch scenes unfold and especially had a love for the pleasures of food. read more...
